RCA Model F38310 widescreen
Just had the tube replaced under warranty due to bad color.
However something is turned up too high and I would like help understanding the term used and how to adjust it through the maintenance interface that I am somewhat familiar with.
Problem: Horizontal shadows appear across the full width on high contrasting areas.
e.g. text on the screen has a shadow across the full width.
The grey sides on non-high-def continually changes brightness as the content of the picture changes.
Alignment looks good, Hi-def looks good.
Adjusting the user settings makes no difference.
I don't want to take it back to the same repair center.

Any help would be appreciated - please email me as well jtnash@hotmail.com
thanks in advance

I don't what to suggest!!!

Did this happen before the new tube was installed?
If not, then I would say (Maybe) that some 'internal'(?) adjustments may be in order. All I can think is that some voltage adjustments may be needed since this is a new tube.

Does this happen on all inputs? (Antenna A, B, component, etc)

It's only happened since the new tube was installed.
In fact the main board and the tube is new. RCA would not authorize the tube replacement until the board was swapped out first due to the high cost of the tube.

Yes it does happen on all inputs and types of input.

One other note. The "black level" on the user settings is to set to about 30% (ref: 100% being turned up all the way) to make the set look good. This adjustment looks about right at 50% on other ones I've played with.

What is the technical term used to describe this condition of these horizontal "shadows" in high contrast parts of the screen?
maybe shadows is not a good word, maybe its more of an artifact.

I too would think that its an internal adjustment or even an adjustment from the maint menu.

thanks in advance for your help

I'm really sorry, but all I can offer is that you really need to contact RCA/Thomson and the service guys that performed the work and get this resolved by them (to keep the warranty intact).

If you start messing around (service menus and such), you may never get it fixed or have to pay a huge service fee!

It'll probably be a tough time, but you will have to be patient and persistent with RCA. BTW.... document everything (names, times, case numbers, copies for FAXes, etc)!

Sorry I can't be of more help!:(
Good Luck!

Before they replaced the tube they installed a new cicuit board that was bad. Then they changed the tube and left this board on place. Once the original circuit board was reinstalled everything was fine. the set is working well and the tech finally figured out how to calibrate it. I didnt charge him for training time!!!!
(I had to be very patient to get this set repaired)
