View Full Version : Toshiba 57H82 - FYI
Well, I've been lurking on these forums for some time and thanks to many of the messages posted here, I was able to make a decision and purchase of a Toshiba 57H82.
It arrived Yesterday from Sears. The sears people hooked up cable, turned it on got a picture and left. My wife turned it off and waited for me to get home to hook up the other stuff.
I get home turn it on and it works for a little while then the red CRT goes beserk! It looks like the red tube fell out of position, but the red portion if the image is bowed in from the top and bottom. The Green and Blue look normal.
Anyway called Sears back told them the set was D.O.A and they wanted me to get it serviced.
After hearing the horror stories of back ordered parts and weeks in the shop here on these forums, I told them I wanted a new one.
The new one will be delivered on Tuesday. I certainly hope this is an isolated incident and not a problem with these models. It may have been something minor to fix, but I really didn't want to chance it. It seems RPTVs have a reputation for problems and long repair times.
This is a big deal for our family. We have been watching movies on videotape on a 13" monitor. This television is part of a new Surround sound progressive scan DVD system we put together last weekend. The TV was the last part of the system to be delivered. Can't wait to see movies in widescreen/bigscreen mode. Until then, I'll just have to read about your experiences here.

Man that is a horror story!
I had my new 57H82 delivered last Thursday (8/12/02) and it looks great! But, there is one thing that is BAD that I am thinking is wrong with the set...
When I connect up the HDTV as my center channel, I get really thin wavy lines in it whenever there is sound. Mainly the 'big boomer' sounds. Still, it is annoying. This happens regardless of what is being broadcast. My stereo has regular speaker out plugs - where the bare wire are put in after your release a spring button (it is a Sony). Well, the jack on the HDTV is a RCA style. I had to make the cable for this. I took a good quality long cable and cut the end off one to put it in my stereo. Still, the lines are there.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks.
And good luck with your new Toshiba, I am sure they will get it right.
If I remember correctly from reading the 57H82 manual. The center channel in on the Toshiba is a line level input, not a speaker input.
That is, it should not be connected to the center channel speaker out on the surround receiver. If your receiver has a center channel "Pre-" out, then you can connect it to that.
Hooking up the center speaker output to the 57H82 center in could cause damage to the set. particularly if you turn up the volume. At the very least it would over drive the input - perhaps causing the interference you are seeing?
My receiver doesn't have a center channel pre-out, so I am stuck putting a center channel speaker on top of the set. instead of using the built in one. I noticed if you place the speaker on top of the light gray bezel, it can cause the screen to deform and bulge out a little. (Weight of the speaker?) So I have to be careful to place the speaker back farther on the wooden part of the cabinet where it is more solid.
Anyway, I am getting the new one tomorrow. We'll see how this one works.

Ok. I am just learning here. I really appreciate all the help. I thought that since I had a 'surround receiver' and Toshiba said that it can be used for the center channel, that I had it whipped. Now, the sound was a bit off, but it really sounded great! I will have to pick up a different receiver (?) that I can do this with, I guess.
At least that is what I am reading here with this all. Am I right?
Regarding the center channel, I just used the center speaker provided by the surround system. Depending on what speakers you have. I've read somewhere that you want all your speakers to have the same "Timbre" whatever that is - so you want them to match. Using the TVs speaker for center channel would be a mismatch. But then thats what I've read I have virtually no experience putting together surround systems and listening to different configurations.
Woo Hoo! Got my replacement 57H82 yesterday. Life is good. Of course, I have some questions about how to do convergence, etc. But I'll start another thread on that.
By the way, that Hiss that I've read about when the volume is set to 1. I have that also, I think its just part of the engineering xxH82. For me it isn't noticable unless I put my head next to the speaker - a non-issue, but I know some people are bothered by it.
Well as a follow up to the previous posts...
After 10 days, the second 57H82 died.
No video, distorted sound. Sometimes when I turn it on, it turns itself off.
Sears is picking it up Tuesday.
Circuit city is delvering a new Hitachi 57uwx20B Wednesday.
I hope Hitachi has better qc than Toshiba.
Good luck to you Toshiba owners.

Sears would have replaced it with a Hitachi had you asked. I work there and this week we had to replace 2 57H82s (one with a Hitachi and one with a Sony). I personally have been seeing a lot of problems in the forums on this particular model. I wonder if it is the batch designated for Sears (I think not) or the model.
I prefer the Hitachi or Sony anyway...
psal2, I as well work for Sears and haven't had any problem with the xxH82 line. I recommend the Hitachi then the Toshiba and try to steer people away from the Sony as i've been reading several forms and different issues keep reappearing.
The only problem I have had with a 57H82 was a Delievery (SLS) problem. They dropped the TV and had to bring my customer out a new one.
At the time I got the 57UWX20B from Circuit City, Sears was not selling it. Last Friday, Sears had Hitachi on sale for $450 less than I payed for it at Circuit City. Thanks to CC's 'Price Matching' policy, I was able to get the difference plus 10%. So I made out pretty well.
Only one stupid problem...
Its been two weeks since Sears picked up my Toshiba and they STILL haven't credited my credit card. They keep telling me it hasn't made it back to the warehouse. Where in the heck has it been for the past two weeks? Still in the Truck?!?
Regarding Tosh vs Hitachi. Now that I have had a chance to watch both TVs. I like everything about the Hitachi more than the Toshiba except one thing. The 4:3 stretch mode is much better on the Tosh. The 4:3 stretch on the Hitachi doesn't look very good.
One interesting thing about the Hitachi is that it is switchable between 540p and 1080i. I've switched back and forth between them and cannot notice any difference. Based on my experience, if you were comparing models upconvert 480i to 1080i(Sony) vs 540p(Toshiba.) Don't use that as a justification to buy the different models. I honestly cannot tell the difference between the two modes. Of course the Hitachi does both.
Hitachi has a setting to turn off SVM. It makes a noticable improvement in my picture to have SVM off.
Just my $.02

Yea I happend to stroll into a Circuit City a few days ago to do some comp shopping and I noticed that Their advertised Hitachi xxSWX Price is 200-300 more than Sears Unadvertised Regular Price. Their Sony and Toshiba prices are identical.
On a side note i feel that the Hitachi upconversion is far better than any other. I've noticed that depending on the source DishNet 480i or OTA 480p the 540p or 1080i upcoversion does make a difference. On the DishNet upconverting to 1080i makes the picture look horrendous, while upconverting to 540p isn't quite as bad. The OTA conversion to 540p isn't nearly as good as upconverting that same signal to 1080i
Sears has also started carrying the XWX line of Hitachis which I did not think we would be getting.

I can't wait to see the XWX series. We are suppose to have a 65" in the store when it is available.
I think the Hitachi is going to take a good run at the Sony again. Last year the Sony overtook the Hitachi (at least in our area) but right now the Hitachi looks better with a HD signal.

Joel,
If it was on a delayed billing, you will see the credit as a delayed billing credit. If no credit has been issued and you did not have a delayed billing, I would complain because it could show on your credit report if you miss a payment that technically you don't owe. If I were you, I would call that store's manager and ASK where the credit is. Not your fault if the truck got lost...

It's the people that work there that make a difference.
Wow, there are some great info on this thread. I was just reading the Sears Price Match Guarantee. They state you can bring in the order form which includes the shipping costs they will beat the price difference by 10%. Has anyone tried that and because many of these out-of-state vendors do not charge sales tax, has anyone had any success in trying to get Sears to get you that price after they charge you tax?
Thanks a million, Allen

First, with Sears, sales tax is charged for the state of delivery. (You buy it in PA you will pay 6% sales tax (7 in Phila or Pittsburgh) and there is no way around that. However, if you buy it in PA and have it shipped directly to DE (0%) or VA (4%) then you can get them to modify the tax. The government wants their money, and unless you order with an online retailer that DOES NOT have a location in your state, you will pay the sales tax.
Second, Sears will NOW only price match internet sales if the internet seller has a "brick and stick" store, e.g. Circuit City, Best Buy, Tweeter, etc and it has to have a local store nearby. Where I am there is no Best Buy (yet) so a price match wouldn't be available for Best Buy in the Harrisburg PA area.
Third, if within 30 days you find a lower price, Sears will match that price and give you an additional 10% of the difference. That is You bought TV for $2199.99 and find it on sale next week at Circuit for $1999.99, Sears will give you $200 plus another $20. This is the same at Circuit.
Hope that helps you
Pete
