I'll try not to make this a mouthful....all I really need is some basic advice. I'm shopping for an HDTV (my first) and since I personally don't have the knowledge I turned to the layman's aide - consumer reports. I had narrowed it down to a Toshiba 50H81, but then I found there was a 50H82, 50HX81, 50HX82, and I also found a 50HDX82? I can't seem to find a definitive difference? I want to assume that that is the progression as far as oldest to newest models....but even if that assumption is correct I don't even know what that means??? I've even tried contacting the manufacturer but haven't much luck with that either. If anyone has a few extra minutes and knows about this stuff, I would be forever indebted to you for a little guidance here w/the basic differences in the models.....and maybe even a little advice? Thank you!!!
One of the first decisions you need to make is whether you want a Widescreen or 4:3 TV. See the following link for some discussion on this issue:
Widescreen vs. 4:3 (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?s=&threadid=600)
Then you'll need to think about the DVI issue (search this and other forums for discusions regarding DVI).
Once you've decided on the TV, you need to get it properly set up in your home (see links on convergence, Avia, etc)
This is not just another TV purchase...
After that, it should get easy. Good Luck.

57U: thanks for the help. I've pretty much decided on a 16:9 so I'm doing alright in that department. Now as far as the calibrating goes....could someone with a pretty decent head on their shoulders that can pick up on things pretty quickly sufficiently calibrate w/the help of AVIA? I'm quite the perfectionist so I'll probably end up enjoying that part....it might be right up my alley! The whole DVI issue seems to be really "uncertain" right now from what I've been reading??? I'm the kind of person who when they buy something wants to do it right the first time with slightly "above average" equipment to start with so that its not immediately obsolete so that it will last a decent amount of time and not need to be upgraded in a couple years......so what would you recomend? Should I buy now? A couple posts were saying that Toshiba was the only one actually addressing the issue and saying that an upgradable option will be available for all current not DVI compliant sets (assuming DVI is instituted of course???)......however I have yet to personally see anything stating that from Toshiba? Thanks again for all the help....I really appreciate it! Hopefully I'll get schooled enough so that I can pass some info on to others to! :)

3. A couple posts were saying that Toshiba was the only one actually addressing the issue and saying that an upgradable option will be available for all current not DVI compliant sets 1. Yes.
2. No one can say for certain which direction this will all go, although there's no lack of conjecture.
3. Since you sound like a person who's not in a hurry and would like to do it right the first time. I'd suggest you do get a set with DVI/or "upgradable" as Toshiba calls it. The new Hitachi sets due out this month are more than DVI upgradeable. They have DVI. Most of the new sets coming out this fall will address this issue in one form or another - Firewire, etc.
