Am looking at this refurbished... pretty good price (just over 600). Does anybody have one or know if they have a good picture and sound?

Thanks

Got one 3 weeks ago at Best Buy - they had a sale for new in box at $799.

My old TV was croaking so I looked at the Philips several times at a couple of Best Buy stores in my (Seattle) area. Looked very, very good with non-HD signal in the stores. Attendent at one store raved about how he was going to get one as soon as he got paid. Then I went to another store to actually buy it and they had two floor models, both with blown picture tubes. The guy said they'd had a lot of returns on both the Philips and the Samsung 30" 16:9s - bad tubes. When I said I was going to try anyway he said "Why would you do that when I told you what I did?"

I responded that $800 was a couple hundred less than the Samsung and $600+ less than the 30" Sony, so for that I was willing to gamble. He then tried to sell me the Best Buy maintenance contract for $400. No thanks. After lugging the beast home (150#) I started wondering if the in-home service contract wasn't worth it after all. But then - aha - I opened the box and out fell Philips' own 2-year in-home maintenance contract for $140 or some such. Deal.

So far so good. Decent but not killer non-HD picture, fabulous in HD. Sound okay but I have it running through a home theater setup so have muted the TV's internal speakers. Lots and lots of input options, very useful with "legacy" bits and pieces like VCRs. I should mention service is via Comcast digital/HD.

Your refurb is probably one of the "bad tube" units, so what do you think the chances are of lightening striking twice?

Good luck.

i just bought one on teusday. the non hd signal is pretty good, better than a regular tv, however if you get bad reception, you notice every little bad detail since the screen is so damn crisp and clear. HD picture is amazing at 900 bucks. i highly recommend this if you want a widescreen under 1000.

by the way, i would never buy a refurbished tv, i say just save up a bit more money if you have to and get a brand new one.

I purchased my 30PW850H at Costco. Darn thing is heavy, especially in the front. Great picture, no DVI input, and no HDTV OTA receiver. I've heard from other newsgroups that it can't do 720P, but I haven't been able to confirm it. I ordered V*, and they are supposed  to be here Wednesday afternoon, 5/26/2004.

I also have this set, i love it so far i just cant find a calibration dvd like the avia or video essentials. For the users that have this tv what settings do you guys use for watching movies or satelite, i have a 6000u dishnetwork but i cant find the appropriate setting for the tv to watch movies or games. I try multimedia and movie for viewing but its too dark. I want to get it so that it looks right, i want some suggestions.

I just picked one up as well at Costco. They have it this week for $599 after a $100 instant coupon that they send out in the passport coupon books to members.

I'd be interested in finding out how other people have been setting up their screens as well.

I sold on eBay my 1 y/o Panasonic 32" 4:3, in order to buy this one. I gotta say, I think the panasonic had a better HD picture, but the widescreen on the new one is nice!

Maybe i'll upgrade in a year.

Darn the $100 bucks off from Costco ended August 14th. Anyone know of a better deal. I am looking for something in 16:9 around $600. This is just to get me buy until the LCD, DLP, LcOS becomes more mature.

If your interested MeanGene, i am selling the newer model philips, the 30PW8402 30" widescreen hdtv for $600.The tv has everything that came with it, and i just bought the set about 2 month ago.The set has hardly been used and has been sitting on my tv stand with a sheet over it to keep dust off.

Reason i'm selling it is to get a bigger hdtv set.The tv is in brand new condition, and only has about 30 hours of use on it.

I think the Phillips has a better picture than the Sanyo and I don't really want to spend $750 for something that is just temporary. I really liked the Phillips $599.00 deal. But, I will look at the Sanyo a little harder. Anyone know the difference between a digital comb filter and a digital 3D comb filter?

If you play videogames, a motion adaptive 3D comb filter is a must.Generaly if i were you i would look for a set with the 3DY/C comb filter, the best on the market. It does a really good job of cleaning everything up in the picture for composite and RF sources.

But if your going to use the tv set for watching dvd's, then the comb filter should'nt matter because you are going to bypass the comb filter circuit, by using component cables.

... and the comb filters are bypassed with S-video and digital video inputs as well.

Just picked mine up one at best buy and I love the thing! I got one hell of a deal too check this out. They had a HDTV blowout and this tv was for sale for 599 at best buy which i thought was a good deal. I went through the checkout and it rang up at 499! I added my 10% off coupon I had and I walked out of the store spending 476 bux. I was SO happy I can't say it on text hehe. But this tv freakin rox! :D

What is the real difference between 1080i and 1050i?

Nothing that you'll visibly detect.

I was thinking of heading to my local Costco and buying the floor demo they have for $549, but if yours is still available, we should talk. Please write at brl@usa.net. Thanks.

Ratman, do you know why they scraficed that 30i? I didn't realize it until after I bought it.

I'd assume it was cheaper to produce or something.

btw - I have one of the costco sets and i'm very happy with it and the service I've had. When I bought the TV the screen wasn't set properly - I called phillips and they had a guy out the next day to fix it - IN home for free.

Ratman, do you know why they scraficed that 30i? .

Hell if I know! Why do some sets go to 768p?
Are they better than 720p?

It's like Bill Cosby said... "Why is there air?"
(answer: To fill up volleyballs and basketballs.)

Why do some Whales (largest mammals), only eat plankton (microscopic)?

Why do they call the seats in a stadium 'stands', when everyone sits?

how are games displayed on this when it only accepts 1080, and 480?

what happens if the game is 720?

i also saw this tv set at walmart, and it seems like a good deal, and i will be playing lots of ps2 and xbox on it, so i really want to know how these would show up.

If a TV doesn't accept 720P and you feed it a 720P signal, you'll get nothing displayed on your TV (black or blue screen). You need to play such games at 480P on such a TV, or get a TV that accepts 720P.

I have the 34" Phillips DirectView CRT which only accepts 480p and 1080i and I love my X-Box.

So I'm in the same boat; luckily most all X-Box games are 480p only a few games support 720p (26 to be exact give or take a few new realeases) and much fewer support 1080i (5-7 total; most which suck anyways). Here is a good site that gives you a breakdown of what all systems games support.
