i havent heard anything about the color flicker/burst(mine is red)problem in awhile. actually, i dont much mind the color burst problem at shutdown, its actually kinda cool looking. anyway, has anybody gotten toshiba to actually acknowledge and/or rectify this problem for them. i called toshiba about a month ago and spoke to a not-so-informed costomer service guy, and he had told me he had never heard of this problem. the reason i am bringing this subject to the surface again is because my 50hdx82 is about to have its 1 year birthday and that means my warranty is done. i really hate the idea of having to purchase an extended warranty just to hope and gamble that toshiba recognizes this as a serious problem sometime during my EXTENDED warranty and finally fix it. i can honestly say that there is not 1 time that i watch my 50hdx82 for more than 1.5 hours and not say at least once"i cant believe i paid 2 grand for a tv that friggin flickers" or the even more popular, "there it went, did you see it? it happened again" even though my girlfriend doesnt see it, and she tells me im crazy, it drives me nutty, and i know i see it. maybe she doent see it because she didnt shell out the 2 G'sfor the tv. dont get me wrong, im sure everyone else that owns one of these would agree that when this tv is behaving, it looks amazing and are very happy with their purchase. but once that flicker starts in, i would rather be in front of my old 22" hitachi, NOT talking to myself about seeing this damn flicker. ok, i'll stop venting now, i think i got my point across. if anybody has any new info or experiences about this subject, feel free to let me know, or if you would like to vent as well, let it out, it helped me a little.:)
I have 65 and a friend has a 50HDX82. Neither of our sets have exhibited this problem. His first set lost the red gun after a day and the set was replaced.

thanks for the reply lee, i am happy to hear that you have not had this problem. im thinking about calling toshiba and asking to speak to a manager and telling him my situation with the warranty. hopefully i can get somewhere with this. i will post back with the outcome as soon as i make the call.
That's not a problem we've heard about for awhile. I'd definitely get it fixed. Here's the only thread I can find about the issue, its from March of this year.

if I were you, I would call toshiba or a local authorized toshiba repair company and have them come and look at it.. Have you done that yet? I would hope you did when you first noticed it.

yes, i actually showed a tech when he came out for another prob i had with the sound. unfortunately, the problem was at its early development stage whre it would only show after watching for an hour or 2. but he did see the color burst that happens at shutdown, and he told me that was because the set was new and it was going through some sort of breakin process. i will be calling toshiba in a few days and let them know again what the problem is, and hopefully i can recreate it when a tech comes to my house again.

just a quick update, i am having a tech come in on tuesday again to look at the tv, and hopefully this time he will see the flicker. if he doesnt, i am going to insist that he takes it with him to his shop so he can watch it for awhile and witness it. by the way, i emailed a professional tech about the problem and gave me a small but interestig bit of info. here is the entire letter to and fro. I will post again when i have an update.Subject Toshiba RP flicker problem
Question i have a toshiba 50hdx82 rear projection that is just under a year old now. i am experiencing a problem where afyter watching for about an hour or so, i can notice a subtle erratic red flicker that plagues the picture of what i am viewing. it happens on all video sources going through the tv. it is subtle, but definitely notcable. i ahd a service tech in when it started about 4 moths ago, and he said it was something along the lines of the tv being new and the red gun was breaking in. my tv also does this quick 1 second red color burst upon shutting down the tv after wathcing for a halkf hour or so, and gets more pronounced the longer the tv hasd been on. its kinjd of looks like a quick laser light show. its really hard to explain. i am not so concerned about the laser shaow thing, but i feel it probably has something to do with the main flicker problem. if you have any ideas, please let me know. i have a tech comming on tuesday to look at it again, and i am going to insist that he takjes the tv with him to make sure he gets a chance to see the problem, unlike the first time i had a tech look at it. my warranty witrh toshiba is up in 2 weeks and i really hope that thispropblem gets resolved. thanks in advance for your help.
Answer Hi Mark,
If Toshiba used the same manufacturer for they're picture tubes (CRT's) that Sony did, your set has bad picture tubes and they should all be changed.
Sony had a bad run of CRT's and they're fix is to replace all 3 of them.
Relay this message to the servicer you have and have them check and/or replace all three guns.
These tubes sometimes will work out the minor shorts in them, but why take that chance if they're still under warranty.

i had a tech come and look at the set today, and of course the flicker was not happening at that time. DOH! But he did see the red color "burst" that happens when i shut down the set, so he dismantled the set, fiddled around with it for a bit, and determined that the red crt had to be replaced:D . ugh, what a load off of my mind. With just 2 weeks left in my warranty, i got what i wanted, and he didnt even opt to take my set with him to the shop to varify the problem:). So, now i will be calling toshiba to tell them what happened and maybe see if i can have them extend my warranty because of the problems i have had. who knows if the other crts(blue, green) are going to hold up? its worth a try anyways. i will again post after the install of the new red crt and let everyone know if the problem goes away.

Whatever happened with this issue? Did Toshiba rectify the situation? How about the new Red gun?
I have a 50hdx82....and last night, after a power outage I went downstairs, turned on my TV (which was off at the time AND plugged into a surge protector)....and noticed a screen wide "red" tint. Not sure if it's tied to the power outage/surge, but needless to say I'm going to put a call into Toshiba and see if they can send someone out. I too have noticed the "light show" on shutdown, and I've followed teh "flicker" threads....and think I even have a few posts in some of the Toshiba issue threads.
Thanks for any info!

i completely forgot to update this thread. so, the tech came out and finally did acknowledge the problem and determined that i had a "bad" red gun. so after waiting a few weeks for the shop to get the replacement, he came to my house installed and is now working great. well, actually i shouldnt say everything. as since the install, i have noticed alot more little horizontal spikey things(artificts) when displaying red lettering or full red screens or a full black screen with white lettering. i am not sure what the correct term for this is, but i am getting alot of it, which is actually quite dissapoionting. i am hoping this will just be a tweak i can do in the service menu. but as for the color probmlem, it is gone, no more light show at shutdown, and no more red tint flicker. and just a week shy of my warranty running out. whew! i hope this helps, buddy. just remember, if the tech comes out \, and trys to tell you the crt's are still breaking in or gives you some crap and trys to blow it off, just insist that you have done extensive research on the matter and you know that many others are having this problem. or print some stuff out and present it even before he looks at the tv. thats what i did. the reason i say tyhis is because the first time this SAME tech came out, he blew it off as being new crt's or some other lame excuse. if you want good back up info, i emailed some tv techs at allexperts.com and they were very helpful and had already encountered this problem before. i wish you alot of luck, and hope you can get this taken care of. if you need anymore info, please dont hesitate to ask. MERRY CHRISTMAS!:santa:

My color burst (red) went away eventually. I never had the flicker problem.
Maybe the elves came and fixed it while I was asleep.

Hello fellow Toshiba owners.
It's been a long while since I have been to the forum. I'm sad to say that my return marks a very unsettling event. To make a long story short, my 50HDX82, is experiencing the dreaded red flicker AGAIN! Two years later mind you. Yes, the same problem 2 years later after a new red CRT was put in to replace the same EXACT problem.
I haven't called Toshiba yet, but I just hope I can keep my cool when talking to a rep. If anybody has any suggestions as to what I should do, seeing as though I am out of warranty period. The reason I ask is because I don't forsee them being very eager to help me get this problem rectified without having me cover the entire cost.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Now I'm off to research the lemon law.
