View Full Version : Does Convergence Help Tube HDTVs

I read on a web site that running a convergence is most beneficial to projection TVs, and tube TVs do not benefit that much. I purchased a Toshiba 34HF83 about two months ago. I'm overall very happy with it, but think my settings aren't as good as they can be.

For example, when watching and HD show (TW Cable, Moto 5100-component cables) the picture is excellent, but when looking at a still image (like a wall or something) it looks like the picture moves a little bit (is this called ghosting?).

When watching SD stuff, the colors seem to be muted somewhat from a normal TV, like the grass on a football field is less green. I've played with contrast/bright/ect and have everthing set as good as I can (and overall, i'm very pleased). I'm just wondering how much better the picture can get if I run a convergence (using one of the setup DVDs). I reluctant to do too much work in the service menu because that seems like it could be over my head. I've tried to read the FAQs, but I haven't gotten all my questions answered from there (but they are a great source).

I don't believe that direct view TVs have a convergence requirement.

Ghosting is a repetitive reflection to the right of the object that gradually disappears. It most noticeable on static high contrast pictures. It does not move. How does your picture move? Is it some tiny wavy pattern which you can see on still uniform objects, or slight jittering? Vertical or horizontal? See my posting about horizontal jerking at http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=9892
