Has anyone seen this monitor yet? Samsung.com says it was shown at Home Entertainment 2002 and will be in retailers late August.

I haven't seen it but I pre-ordered one sight unseen. I am quite confident I will love it. DLP is simply an outstanding technology and it is the perfect size for my cabinet to boot.

Where did you pre-order it? How much? What gave you the confidence to pre-order it?

Hi again. I was researching an HDTV that would fit in my tv cabinet (that has exactly 40.5 inch opening) and match my viewing habits and had thought I wanted the old samsung 40 inch LCD (model slk407 I believe) and I even placed an order on line for one. Anyway, I found out that it had been discontinued so lucky for me I wasnt able to order one. I had seen several LCD models at the stores and was quite sure that for my taste a rear projection just isnt bright enough and I sometimes view from quite an angel so again I just wasnt happy with the quality (for my personal preferences) of rear projection.
I went to the Samsung USA website and saw that they were getting ready to release a DLP model in the summer but I didnt even know what DLP was so I started researching and seemed to read only great reviews with the only apparent drawback being the price (until samsungs entry into the market)
I called Samsung USA and asked if they had any info on when it would be released and the expected price but the phone monkey told me there was no way to get that info. Anyway I called back and got a differnet person who put me directly in touch with steve panosian who is VP in charge of Video products (or something like that) and one hell of a nice guy to boot. After talking to him for a while I felt very confident that the hlm437 was the model I wanted. He put me in touch with a distributer he has worked with for a long time and they got me on a list to receive one of 9 sets they are supposed to get in mid-late july or about a month before the general release. I paid a $500 deposit had to agree to give Samsung my email and phone and address and they plan on doing lots of follow-up with us early recipients.
From what Steve told me they are releasing 2 versions of the DLP sets in both 43 and 50 inch models with a tantus and non-tantus version of both sizes. The Tantus models (including the 437) will be available from AV specialty dealers like Ken Cranes and Tweeters, etc while the non-tantus slightly cheaper versions will be available from Best Buy with the only difference being a upgraded case and better audio (which no one realy uses anyway since we all have surround sound systems). The video is exactly the same, as far as I can tell anyway.
The guys who I am buying my set from were at the show and assumed I was there but I told them I had never seen one and there quote was "its the coolest thing in the world".
Anyway I dont want to post the exact price I paid since I dont know exactly if it is what will be there price with the general release. The list price for the 43 inch tabtus is 4000 and I'm paying significantly less than that.
If you like you can e-mail me directly for more info on the distributor and price at kwh4@yahoo.com

I saw these sets at the Home Entertainment show in New York. It was love at first sight. Spent half the time at the show just looking at these sets with jaw droped. Samsung guys were realy proud of these, as well they should.
The image quality will blow you away. Thought of buying Plasma, more for space consideration and ego than quality. But a side by side comparison, at 70 to 80 lbs, 15 to 18 in depth and less than half (dare I say third) the price I'm saving my pennies and gearing up for one of these babies. DirectTV, new reciever and a new shelf for my Salamander Synergy.
Hear these sets will hit selected stores in Sept. Will probably fly off the shelves. If anyone knows rollout and stores let me know (it'll be our secrect till we get one).
I'm an old soldier and seen a lot of tech come and go but this is my baby. Save your money, sell stuff on ebay, get a second job and then be ready to be amazed.
Enjoy

Does anyone have any idea how these models will compare to direct-view tv's in sunlight?
My tv space has a sunny afternoon exposure and it is sometimes difficult to see the picture on my direct-view tv. Will the Samsung be worse?
I'm thinking of buying one even with this problem, but if they perform better that would really seal the deal.

Regarding the sunlight problem, no better than a rear-screen projection TV that is on shelves today.
I just saw the first 50inch at Best Buy. Wow! It was showing a 480i signal upconverted to 480p. Wow!
Compared to other Rear Projection and LCD and a week with my brother-in-laws Panasonic Plasma (1m pixels), this is going to be great!
West Coast, you can special order through Mangolia Hi-Fi in Santa Rosa.
There is also a East Coast distributor who I can put you in touch with if you email me directly.

I am now a proud owner of the Samsung HLM437w.
It is truely a great TV. Better than my brother-in-law's 43" Panasonic plasma.
What will make the difference in viewing this TV are two things.
1) Set up of color, brightness, contrast settings using a set of DVD on Progressive Scan player.
2) Good source material. I have DirecTV which is a compressed MPEG format (480i) making my picture fuzzy. But when I switch to progressive scan DVD with a good DVD (ala The Fifth Element Super Bit), wow! I haven't tried an HDTV source yet. Waiting for Echostar and DirecTV to offer more source material and agree on receiver platforms. Manufacturers of set top boxes are waiting too before producing too many models (i.e., DVRs).

There is a mega discussion on this set and the poor DirecTV picture quality on avsforum.com under PRTVs.

To those of you who own the HLM437W, what are your impressions of the brightness and contrast with this DLP set? RPTVs have never interested me because of low brightness and contrast and poor viewing angles. Is this set better in these respects than exisiting CRT and LCD-based RPTVs? I am very interested in this HDTV monitor (although I have never seen one), however, it would go in a room with moderate to high levels of ambient light. Would this be a problem?

DLP blows away LCD and the now older generation RPTV. I would wager the brightness of the Samsung DLP is next to if not equal to plasma.
Magnolia Hi-Fi (west coast), Best Buy (Minneapolis) and Tweeters (Chicago) have the Samsung DLP to preview.
