So I bought the 50H82 about 8 months ago. I loved it and knew I could upgrade to DVI so no problem. Well the Cable company turned on the DVI so I called and emailed about when I could upgrade. Got the standard answer that they are working on it. Well I wrote back and asked for a specific date and was rather pushy about how I bought the tv 8months ago being told I could get DVI for it and now there was a need / use for it. Well they told me to email them my number so they could call me. They called and I said I wanted DVI on my tv and asked when it would be an option. They said they still haven't fixed this and once they fix it they are fairly clueless about implementation of sending techs out across the country and how much to charge etc etc so she then said right away that she could send the 51H83 at no cost to me and they would pick up the 50H82 if I wanted to do that......................YOU THINK!

SO got the tv today and need to change my signature - DVI is awsome. The analog channels are better - why is that??? and the digitial channels are better. HD is HD and maybe when I watch something like CSI I can tell if there is a difference. Anyways - if you want the upgrade call them about this.

mhdiab,

I just bought a new 65h83 and Directv is scheduled to install my new dish and tuner on Monday. So far I have only used DVD to watch the TV.

I was wondering if in general you were happy with the 50h82? Is 51H83 any better other than the DVI? In general are you happy with Toshiba and have you done any adjustment (thru the service codes) to the sets?

Yes they sent me a new tv due to not being able to upgrade to DVI at this point. No hassle - no cost and delivered to my living room and then they took the 50H82 back.

50H82 - I loved it. I am sure that more money gets me a better tv, but for what I paid I think it is the best thing out there. Picture was great and I did tweak in the service menus. Both the sides and the Convergence grid - you would be happy without doing that, but it sure helped :)

The 51H83 is great. My only problem is that there is more of a lag when I change the channels and with DVI you need to turn of the right thing first - tv / cable to make it reset properly and I keep forgetting and it adds more lag when I turn on the guide. However, the pic is awsome and both the analog channels and the digital channels are so much better - huge difference. I am sure that you will be happy with your tv

Well, as of today I have something in common with all of you:

I got my HDTV set up and running.

I posted last Monday that I bought a Toshiba 65H83 set for $1799 and it was going to be deliverd that afternoon. I got a call from the store about 4PM and was told that they had four units in stock and they opened all of them and found them defective!! They said they will be sending one on Thursday (last week) from another store. I got another call on Thursday and the fifth unit from the other store was also defective!! They promised to go and pick up another one which finally was OK and was delivered on Thursday. I called Directv and ordered their HD eqipment package for $399 which was delivered and installed today.

HDNet and Discovery looks awsome. They told me that I also get HBOHD but found out that I need to have the HBO package. The next thing I am going to do in the next few days is to install my OTA anntena. More on that later.

I want to thank everyone over the last 2 months since I joined the forum. I have learned a lot and will look forward to more learning and sharing in the future.

I had read someplace that the digital channels don't look very good on a HDTV sets and that's true with my set. I know I may have to go thru the tweaks but in general all of the non HD channels don't look as good as they do on my 7-year old 60" Mitsubishi. I'll be going thru Lees page with all the tweaks to see if I can improve the non HD channels.

Again, Thanks for all the info and will keep you posted on my progress.

A buddy of mine has the 50H82 and his digital channels do not look as good as the do on my hitachi for some reason.. If his fox hd channel looks grainy that I found really weird. I do know that fox's hd is not actually hd, but mine has no grain to it.. Kinda weird. There can't be a huge difference in the 2 sets..

Also, I see that the top poster got a new 51h83 because the DVi wouldn't work. Did you get that straight from Toshiba? Just wondering if I should tell him that he has that option for a newer set.
Thanks

You are making me think, I bought my panasonic about 11 months ago. I have one more month of warranty. Its just about time I call panasonic and see if they can upgrade my TV with DVI.
I dont know if they will swap, but they can atleast offer an upgrade to DVI.
Thanks mhdiab for posting this. Lets see where this gets me.
