I purchased the Tosh 51h83 2 weeks ago. I was hesitant on buying it because the picture quality looked sub par in the store as compared to other models. Because of numerous recommendations and assurance that the picture quality would drastically improve with direct tv at the house, I made the purchase. The televison picture quality if horrible (very grainy). Solid objects such as scores or menus look fine but anything with action, like sporting events look bad. To get the picture to look satisfactory I have to dim down the TV to the point that it looks dull. I see no purpose in have the tv if this is how I must watch it. I have talked to numerous customer service people about this, all walking me though the steps to adjust convergence, etc. Everyone tells me how great a digital scan DVD will look but I use the TV 99% of the time for sports. I do not have Direct TV HD yet but I did not expect this bad of a pic without HD. I am at the point of returning it while I can and going back to my 8+ year old 46" Hitachi (which looks far better). Any advise/help/suggestions?

If you go to the FAQ and read the post "what you need to do to your new HDTV" that will explain some things.

However, the main purpose for buying an HDTV is to watch HD programmes and DVDs. SDTV will like about the same, if slightly better than an analogue set when properly set up.
