Anyone have a work-around for viewing Letterbox DVDs via the 480p input? As you probably know, letterbox are formated for 4:3 w/ the black bars. But with a widescreen you get a very stretched out image. And with the 280p input you cannot change the wide format like the other AV inputs. I'll be calling Philips next but though other people must be experiencing the same problem. Suggestions?

Many TVs do allow you to stretch 480P properly. If your TV does not allow this, you'll need to switch your DVD player to "Interlaced" mode (480i). Then you should be able to stretch them properly. See the FAQ posts on:

"Widescreen Stretch modes"
"Black Bars"

Interesting. If I try to watch a DVD that was made for 4:3, letterboxed to give you the wide picture, and I'm not able to change it through the menu on the disc, I end up with a picture with bars on the top and bottom (due to the letterboxing) as well as bars on the left and right (because it's in 4:3).

But I don't come across many of those DVDs. If my TV allowed me to, I'd set it to 'auto' so it would detect all the bars and zoom in, but our TVs don't seem to give us any control over what happens on the component inputs.

The Philips are supposed to not be affected to burn in from those bars...so why worry about it, though I do try to minimize it. If you want to stretch it, use the 480i inputs on AV2.
