View Full Version : 42H81 Geometry Adjustment

I've got an aging 42H81 set, and after a recent move, the geometry got noticeably out of whack. Unfortunately, everything I've managed to read implies that geometry adjustments needed to be done in the designer menu, and not the service menu. And the only thing I've found for designer menu states that somewhere before the H81 series came out, Toshiba either outright disabled it, or changed the button presses to access it, and I've been unable to find out how to do it.

Anybody know how to adjust geometry (not convergence) on an H81 line set?
It seems that information on the H81 era sets is relatively scarce.

Here's the link to the service menu - heed the warnings:

Here's a link to the convergence issue that affects a lot of CRT-RPTVs:

I don't know how to get in to do a full convergence on Toshibas - may be part of the service menu - usually you adjust the green CRT to an "overlay" (or string) to get the lines straight and then converge the red and blue to the green. If you can't adjust the lines once you're in the convergence menu, you may have the convergence IC issue...

Actually not that hard but you need Avia or similiar that has test patterns. You can then set the position of the screen using HPOS LIN, HIT, VLIN
You might need an overlay to do it properly
Nothing is done in designer mode. Read through all the Toshiba thread regarding H81s

You might consider an ISF technician come do it right for you. Well worth the 200-300 dollars IMO

Unfortunately spending 200-300 dollars on the TV is probably spending more than I could sell the thing for in its condition... so I'm very hesitant to go that route as the CRT's suffered some nasty burn in by the previous owner watching entirely too much shop NBC, and it's just not financially reasonable to replace them.

As far as the adjustments, I don't show all of the ones you listed for geometry adjustment... I've got HPOS, LIN, and HTT but no VLIN in my service menu list.

LIN on mine is vert linearity ... but I have no horizontal (assuming that's what you were getting at by having to LIN's listed.)

Also on an unrelated note to geometry... the TV has developed a very subtle red tint that's really only visible in certain situations... would any service menu adjustment aid with that?

Rcut is a gray scale adjustment and can correct a dominance of red in the lower end of the gray scale. Red push is a term that usually refers to the color decoder having a shift to red, and this is independent of gray scale. Altering gray scale to reduce red affects the final color, but also causes other colors to be wrong.
