Does anyone know anything about Optoma DLP televisions? They look really nice and have a good set of features but I can't find anything about them with regards to quality/reliability.

Thanks

I have a DLP front projector. I'm not familiar with that brand but I believe all dlp tv's use a micro mirror device. They are pixal based with each dot on the screen being lit by how fast its mirror is switched on and off. The color is determined by a color wheel. the pro's of this is you don't have to worry about burn lines or color fade. However if the color wheel is slow you may see a rainbow effect if there is alot of movement on the screen. So check on that. Also if a mirror fails you will have a constant black spot on the screen. I have had mine for 2 yrs and have had no problems with it. I would make sure that the resolution is true HD which will be determined by the number of horizonal and vertical lines AKA pixals. good luck

This month's "Extreme Tech" magazine has a look at the latest Optoma DLP projector. They give it a near-perfect score, mostly for it's sub-$5000 price.

I have a RD65 on order. Delivery delayed until mid June. I went to there Milpitas offices and checked out the TV in their showroom. I was inpressed with the features and the DLP technology. Optoma has been making Front Projector DLP for some time.

Robert,

Did you ever get your Optoma set? If so, how is it?

I have had the Optoma RD65 DLP for about five weeks. I am very happy with it so far. The picture is very bright and clear. I have Directv and an OTA antenna for local HDTV channels. My SAT receiver is a Zenith HD520. I have the DVI cable input from the Zenith to Optoma. My son in law is an Optoma dealer. He talked me iinto making this purchase. He has the RD50 DLP in his home. I think the Optoma DLP picture is as good as any I have seen.

Thanks for the info Robert. Now I have one more option to make my decision. Mitusbishi 73" RPTV, Samsung 61" DLP or Optoma 65" DLP.

The list price is $6000. Go to optomatv.com and they will refer you to a dealer in your area. I bought mine from Pro Digital Audio Video in San Ramon CA.

I have an RD50 and have been recently playing HL2 - Counter Strike - Source on it through my computer without any noticeable lag issues.

I also had my PS2 hooked up with no problems.

I would have purchased the RD65 if the money was available. Here is a good link for current price - a bit over $3000 currently, delivered.

Great Price from PC Connection's Website - Via Pricegrabber... (http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=5567920&SourceID=k15506)

RD65h - adds HDCP compliancy for sure...

RD65H Link from PC Connection (http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=5567874&SourceID=k15506)

I'm very impressed with RD50 at this point...

If you get pricing for a Optoma RD65 or Optoma RD50 it may not have HDCP.
On the otherhand, the Optoma RD65H or Optoma RD50H will have HDCP.
I suggest you only consider the sets that have HDCP.
Now you have my $0.02.

Any of their models manufactured after May 2004 should be HDCP compliant according to the tech support person I talked to at Optoma.

I'm looking @ getting one of these TV's from Costco, but I notice that there's some concern from other people concerning the HDCP issue. Sorry for my ignorance in this question, but I'm just starting to look into getting a HDTV and I have no idea what that means. Anyone feel like enlightening a newbie? Also from the specs that are given on Costco website, doesn't mention that it's 1080/720/480. Does it do all the HD modes? Thanks.

Yes, all of the RD models from Optoma are HD compatible through 480p, 720p, and 1080i through one of their component inputs and their DVI input.

One of the component inputs is ony 480p compatible for some reason.

Basically the HDCP is a copy protection scheme that many HD devices will be enforcing in the future (we think...). This includes DVD players, cable and satellite HD set-top devices and the like.

Any optoma manufactured after May 2004 should be HDCP compliant via DVI according to Optoma's technical support.

Enjoy!
