It may be "burn in", but I am not sure. When I look at my TV I see that the vertical strips on the left and right sides of my widescreen are normal. The center part of my screen appears "dirty". This area is where the standard 4x3 image is displayed. If there is a picture of a blue sky, you can really see how the vertical sides of the picture are just fine, but that center 4x3 area is darker. Has anyone seen this? Any thoughts on if it can be cleaned or maybe permanent damage?

Sure sounds like "burn in" to me. If so... it's permanant.

Definitely sounds like burn in and as indicated by Ratman, it's permanent. See the following post on the topic:

I assume you've been watching a fair bit of 4:3 material.
