Have ordered the monitor and it should be arriving in a week or two. Any experts out there who could help me with the break-in? I will likely use the Video Essentials soon after I get it but I would also like a little more advanced caliberation without having to pay three digit money. Any hints about defeating SVM through remote, setting convergence etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Anyone out there who has this set; can you post your experiences please?

Welcome to HD

To disable the SVM start in Movie mode then adjust contrast to around 38/40 bright down to about 40, color to about 12 and tint to about -5 then hit done twice. You have to do it for each input ie ANT, HD1 etc. Then you can readjust to your room and preferences. Remember contrast kills your guns. Do a 9 point convergence after a couple of months you can do a 56pt.

Will this actually disable the SVM, I was under the impression the power wires had to be removed?

Thanks

Either will work. I just do not feel comfortable yanking wires. By starting in movie mode to disable SVM is easier and you do not have to take a chance at voiding your warranty.

Kevin,

I bought the 57HX81 model a couple of months ago. Would your technique for disabling SVM work for this model? How would I know if it worked after I push enter twice, as you indicated? Thanks! BTW, Do you recommend disabling SVM - It seems like it's annoying and no one likes it???

Yes it should. By the way you only need to hit it once. I say twice just to be sure. I NOW recomend from reading posts from REAL experts, not do the 9pt convergence. Go to www.keohi.com for up to date info.

Thanks Kevin,

Stupid question: What's a good setting for my toshiba 57hx81? I have contrast 50, brightness 60, color 40, sharpness 40, flesh ON, and temperature medium. Any recommendation? Should I buy the AVIA? I did use the THX optimizer...

Yes the Avia will do wonders.(or Sound and Vision).I like the THX for individual DVD's.
I have mine set at 38 contrast, 50 brightness, color about 17(can not remember exactly)sharpness 2, ALS off, flesh, off DNR off, film on,temp cool.
Now this set up is for a darker room. I like to view in low light situations to eliminate glare off the protective screen.
Also if you do change things start in Movie mode, this sets the VSM in a low setting automatically decreasing any edge enhancements. You have to do this for each input. My numbers do vary a little for DVD and HD.
Again the one thing that will improve your picture dramatically is the 56 point conversion.

Thanks Kevin, valuable information!

I am just a bit scared to do the 56 pt. convergence... I looked at the site you gave me keohi.com and it seems a bit overwhelming and I do not want to screw things up... May be I print out all the relevent information, and just take it step by step???

It is a piece of cake after the first 3 or 4 times I can jump up during a commercial and do a touch up. I print some step by step directions that are more user friendly later this evening.

Thanks! Looking forward to it, and can't wait to do the test...

Oh, BTW, one thing I know I can do, and it's getting into the service menu and that's where I am affraid of touching anything and going any further...
