Just bought this 27" LCD Insignia and the OTA digital channels look decent
with just a regular antenna on.

But when i hook it up with my direct tv box (regular, not hd) the picture looks crappy, my old standard tv has a way better picture when its hooked up to direct tv.

I plan on getting a hd direct tv box, but i dont see why my old tv's picture is better than this lcd tv. Don't know if im doing something wrong but any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The better looking channels are going to be the HD channels. Period. The "regular" (also called 480i) channels are kinda stretched for the tv. Try playing with the ratio to make sure you're looking at it correctly. I think the correct ratio is 4:3. I just bought an NS-27HTV and it looks fairly decent that way. Maybe a snapshot of what the picture looks like may help us.

See the HDTV FAQ on "Why does my HDTV have poor PQ".
