I don't know if this can be controlled or not, but the color black on my set is almost too black. It's hard to make out any details in it, because it's so black. Does anyone know if there is something I can do about this? I have read the FAQ's on setup and made some adjustments, unfortunately I have not got Avia yet.
You are correct, the Avia or VE DVD is the answer. Your 'Brightness' controls how black black is. Sounds strange I know.
Until you get your Avia or VE take a look on your DVD movies, some (the THX ones) have a setup option that you can get in the ball park. The setup is for sound and video.
Atlantis, the Star Wars EP 1 and 2 I believe have it. In the Setup Menu it will be called 'THX Optimizer'.

With some TVs the "auto black level" menu item is not the easiest to find. You said you turned off all the auto settings, just be sure you found this one...
Some TVs do not have a "auto black level" menu item and it actually needs to be changed in the service menu or by a technician...
