Should this be done before doing a service menu convergence?
The links below states that if you have made adjustments using the 9 point convergence to reset convergence to factory default first. Just want to be sure.

yes, user level should be reset before adjusting service level...and preferrably
never used again. user level was pretty bad (few points) on early models (81 included)

you can reset user level via parameters as in the link or you can just center the user level
points by setting each point to 1/2 of the full swing it affords in both dimensions.
ie. if horizontal full swing is 40 clicks, set the point all the way left and click right 20.
40 is just example but i seem to remember that number being significant for my 83 series.
best to count out your own.
and don't leave points in extreme position for long..stresses the convergence chips.
the less you do with convergence grid the better. convergence chips are the first to
go, usually. deal with issues via the geometry params first, then fine tune with service convergence grid and leave user grid alone ie. in the reset/centered state.
i've seen this recommended by knowledgeable folks many time over the years.

Edit: and don't use touch fiocus. it'll just screw up everything you spent
the time to do in service mode..although some claim it got better in later
models (82 and on i believe). it just never made sense to
use it since convergence should not shift much and service menu gives
you the best control.

another edit: make sure you are driving the input you are converging.
ie. have an image up, preferably a crosshatch pattern to check your work.
even though you don't see it when you are adjusting the service convergence grid, i believe it influences things...if i remember correctly.

I would recomend a mylar ovelay grid. It gives you actaul target lines to aim for.

OK Another problem, apparently the newer sets starting from 2001 toshiba blocked the design mode so you users can't access it. Is there a way around It? this seems pretty complicated. I tried on my set following the steps how to get in design mode and it doesn't work.

Check out the HDTV FAQ on "Service Codes"?

Please do not cross post. Your other post had been deleted.

or you could make your own. i took a quick look at my saved stuff and
with some effort i could come up with dimensions for 65" 81 series but
you could probably find it yourself with google.

i made my own (57" 82/83 series) but truth be told, it was not worth the time and effort.
its not like you are gaining anything making your own...no real knowledge is gained...
you are just saving a few measly bucks. gotta have one though.
if i had to do it again, i'd buy one as kevin suggests.
there have been reports (few) of grids being printed incorrectly so knowing
the layout to check the purchased grid would be a good idea. just insurance.

as far as designer mode...i don't know 81 series. i am familiar with 82 and 83
and they have service and addr mode..you need a universal remote
to enter addr mode and you probably don't want to go there..not for noobs..
really just for people that think they know what they are doing and run a major risk
of frying their sets  unfortunately, there was one good reason to
go there on the 83 series: HPOS was missing from service mode.
again, i don't know if there is addr mode in 81 series.

Thanks guys!

I'll leave that to the pros, I will soon get a ISF calibrator to fine tune my set, will he have to reset convergence to factory default before doing the work, Im just asking and make sure the job is done correctly, I guess the
guy will know what to do.

I just did a service mode convergence on my 65H84 and it when you hit 7 to go out of convergence mode, it prompts you to hit the touch focus button. It does a touch focus then a message says "Calibration Complete".

I think the touch focus works fine as it seems to store my service mode convergence as the "master" setting. I've run touch focus since (not is service mode) and it works great.

Touch focus did not work well with the H81 and HX81 series RPTVS

The Toshiba tech checked the set and yes you have to push touch focus at the end of the convergence session to save your work, if not the convergence will default to what it was before and you did all the work for nothing. He said the TF works fine on this model and proved it to me by putting off the red grid and saved it pushing TC, you can actually see were he intentionaly screwed up the convergence, I guess it's earlier models that the TC didn't work. I did it myself after I fixed some geometry and convergence. He also said to never use the 9 points convergence, it's better to use touch focus which will restore the convergence to what it was saved at, I do have to say that the convergence holds much better after I adjusted some geometry issues, now I have another issue, Please read thread "VERTICAL LINE ACCROSS TOSHIBA SCREEN"
