Recently I moved to Austria from the US. Just to make sure that the TV had arrived safely, I connected it to a 1650-watt power converter - the power LED came on, but nothing else was functioning.
So, I bought a 2000-watt heavyduty, continous power step down transformer and hooked up the tv to it. But, apart from power, the tv responds to nothing else - no sound, no picture, no menu - neither from the remote, nor from the front panel buttons.
Is something wrong with the fuses? Power supply? Both? Can I fix it myself? Please help!
Thanks,
Ian
PS: Yes, they have PAL here; but my son has got tons of DVD's and video games, that's why I decided to bring the tv over...

Ian, sorry to hear about the Tosh failure.
It may well be as simple as a fuse. Even so, I'd suggest you pick up a service manual before diving in to the display unless you or a buddy has the experience necessary to open up the back.
Here is alink to ordering a manual...

Good luck!

I have now checked the fuse - it works fine. There is a click sound when the power is turned on and also when the remote power is pressed. But I don't hear the sound from high voltage getting switched on.
I am at a loss now - not knowing German I am hampered in my search for a qualified technician. Please help!
I know this sounds silly, but since we haven't done anything other than switching the TV on, I would go ahead and ask anyway! - could something have com unplugged during the move? all other items (well, most of them) came unscathed - including 2 computers and a grand piano.
Also, apparently there is more than one fuse in there - but all I see is one fuse near the power cord.

In looking at the service manual it shows a 7.0 amp 125 volt fuse near where the cord enters. The next useful thing on the circuit is a transformer though voltages are not indicated (or I cannot decipher them).
On my 50HDX82 the front cover can be somewhat difficult to attach properly and this has caused a non-function on the front on/off button. Not sure if this is your situation but.......
There is a fail-safe circuit that might be in play. Be certain that the polarity of the power source (your 2000 watt transformer) matches the set. I know it might be hugely obvious that the plug only goes in one way, but if the power is reversed then the fail safe might be activated. If it is reversed, then unplugging for more than 5 seconds should restore the picture.

The 2000 watt transformer that I use doesn't convert the frequency. So, I am pretty sure it puts out 50 Hz (instead of 60HZ?). If that the case, could that be the reason why the TV is not responding? What can I do in that case?!
Thank you so much.

The frequency difference could well be the problem. You are limited with your options, one I found online that might work is stepping the local voltage to 12 VDC then using an invertor from the US to step it back up to 120volt 60Hz.

I would hazard a guess that the major difference between a 50 hz and a 60 hz device will be the power transformer. It might be time to ask Toshiba support if that is the only difference and if replacing the transformer will suffice. The inverter idea would likely work too.
Are you also confident that you use the TV in the local environment, meaning do you have a 'cable' connection or is it OTA or are you planning on pre-recorded material?

Most TV's base their scan rate off the local electrical frequency, there might be more to it then just changing the power supply.
