Hi,
I am sorta new to the whole high-end TV thing and I have jumped into the fray by picking up a 53" 4:3 aspect Hitachi 53UDX10B HDTV. From my research online and consumer reports, this one looked like a good TV and I got it for 2200 which seemed like a good price. The HDTV picture on this TV is clear and really looks outstanding. I keep the contrast and brightness down below 50% and it is still watchable during the day no problem. I got the 4:3 because I like to watch recorded TV programs but I also wanted a good home theater system for DVDs for this much cash. I have had the TV for about 10 days now. I know that it has to be one for awhile before the picture quality stabilizes but the problems I notice aren't with the clarity of the image. It is very clear but when I watch DVDs I see 2 noticeable problems with the picture quality (I have already done the AVIA and THX calibration). My DVD player is currently my Xbox since it is the only one I have with 3-part Component Video out. It is set to run in 480p, 720p, or 1080i depending on the material. I do know how to tell which one it is using. The HDTV is set to 540p mode when watching DVDs (the only other choice is 1080i).
1) There are a lot of jagged edges on nearly vertical or nearly horizontal edges. Even the lightsabers in Phantom Menace look rough edged. I tried turning off the Velocity Modulation (edge enhancement) and tried all the different aspects that were available but have had no luck in reducing the jagged edges. They are extremely noticable and not at all what I was expecting when buying an HDTV. This is the most noticable on anamorphic widescreen movies (2.35:1) but is also visible on movies in standard widescreen mode.
2) There are ocassional screen glitches during movie scenes with a lot of fast motion in the them (the pod race and the final scene in the Matrix make this very apparent). I have tried watching these scenes with the options in every conceivable configuration but still get the distortion. The best way I can think to describe this distortion is to say that the whole image suddenly appears to have half of the horizontal lines removed for a fraction of a second and then it appears smooth again.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I would greatly appreciate it!
I am about ready to return this TV because the image quality when watching DVDs is much worse than my old 27" Sanyo on which the images were quite clear with no jagged edges and there were no weird glitchy distortions!
Thank you
