I just purchased a Toshiba 51h84. I had ugraded from a 52 inch RCA. The Toshiba is sharper, but the colors are completely unrealistic. I know this is a long talked about subject. But is there any way to correct the unrealistic, non earth toned colors on this set. I know how to access the Service Menu, but i can only play with the blue/red/greencut, and that didn't seem to completely fix the problem. I just know what colors SHOULD look like, and the TOSHIBA colors are NOT natural. Is there a callibration list that someone has, which will fix this problem. The picture quality is there but the colors are distorted. This is a complicated question, is there any one out there that knows anything about this?
If this can't be fixed, is there another tv within 1000-1600 price range that DOES offer perfect, natural, earth toned colors???

Dot,
I hope you saved the original settings from the Service Menu.
I would definitely go with the recommendations from the FAQ that Ratman posted.
Put the service mode settings back to where they were are pick up one of the setup DVDs as recommended in the FAQ.
Changing the service mode settings without the proper equipment can really muck up the color temp/grayscale of your set.
If you do end up having a service call, don't tell them you were in there tweaking. It could kill your warranty.
Setting the proper Contrast/Brightness then the user color settings using a setup DVD should get you where you need to be.
Good Luck,

if, after heeding all of the excellent warnings and information already posted, you still
want to adjust the colors, here are some tips.
think of cuts as adjusting the "brightness" of the individual crts.
think of the drives as adjusting the "contrast" of the individual crts.
you need to adjust both for each crt to correct grayscale.
the cuts and drives you are likely interested in can be found in the "labeled"
service parameters "RCUT", RDRV" etc. these globally affect all inputs
and scan rates. there are others in the "unlabeled" service parameters
but are proprietary to toshiba and fairly complex. you likely
don't need them at this point.
you will achieve excellent "color" correction adjusting cuts and drives
but to do it right the color decoder should be poked. unfortuanately toshiba
did not make the color decoder available on some models (i forget if 84
series has it..my knowledge is mostly 82 and 83) but even an ISF calibration
won't adjust that on these models so don't worry about it. (there is a rumor
one ISF calibrator on another forum has figured out how to get to the color
decoder in the 83 series but i have seen no info on it)
as posted, it is best to have the proper equipment to adjust grayscale but you can do a very
good job with an 18% gray card illuminated with a high CRI 6500K light.
i would recommend that if you want to do grayscale "correctly", as adjusting
without any reference is almost impossible (but you may improve pic anyway
if things are way out).
here (http://homecentric.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=312) is a discussion in another forum that likely has info you seek.
read it all and follow links for info. 83 series tweaks is what you want to
chase down when following links. some links are obsolete but everything
you need is there in other links. remember, it is for 83 series and does not
one for one apply to your set as some changes were made, but what you are
looking for should be the same.
hope this helps, use at your own risk, blah blah.
good luck, don't break your tv or void your warranty.
