Can someone tell me how to reduce the black level or change a setting to get rid of some of it because in some of my xbox games, things that are supposed to be dark, or shadowed appear black as black can get. I think i need to get to the service menu but I dont know how. I have a toshiba 26HF85.

You shouldn't have to use the service menu (unless you're really into tweaking). An appropriate setup using the contrast/brightness controls is usually enough.

See the HDTV FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV".

I have the same problem as you Klesk and the appropriate setup of contrast/brightness is really not enough. I don't know how to get more shadow details.

and If I want some shadows I have to crank the brightness way up at the point that the tv will brake up in 5 months. So can you help me 57u?? I know how to enter the service menu but I dont know wich item to change. I can post all the items of the service menu if you want.

Thanks for your answer

Perhaps someone with this or a similar TV can comment. If you write down the service menu settings, you can do a change and see if that gets you more shadow details. If not, put the setting back.

How do you get into the service menu for the 26hf85?

Here you go Klesk: To enter the service menu turn the volume all the way down to 0. Press and hold the TV's front panel volume down button, and then press and hold the remote's "9" button for about a second. The service mode will appear. Change item with the chanel button up and down. Change value for an item with the volume button up and down.

For your jaggies I suggest to use component cables and you should be ok. And if you use component cables check if your game support 480p or 720p and turn it on. This way it should get rid of jaggies.

Hi guys,

I have the same problem (shadows are just pure black). Did you find out how to solve this problem? At first I thought it is the HDTV box but the DVD player looks the same, so it has to be the TV. Thanks for any help.

I don't really know right now but im planning to buy the "service menu user guide" for my 26HF85. They sell them at ebay for 10$. It should help alot to get a better picture. I'll post when i'll get one copy and. This way I will be able to help you guys.

I have the 26HF84. I too felt the blacks were too black and some of the dark colors were too dark.

I found somewhere on this site some color settings which seemed to help:

Brightness - 32
Contrast - 40
Color - 25
Tint - 0
Sharpness - 25
Color - medium
SVM - low

These settings made the darks look brighter without satuating the other colors. Too much color will kill the tv too quickly.

Black Level = brightness
White level = contrast
