Does anyone else think the HD picture just isn't smooth. Mine just always appears grainy or pixelated. Is that low levels of video noise. Has anyone gotten there's professionally calibrated? I thought I would bbe blown away by it but I just think it is ok. Any suggestions or help with calibrating this thing would be great.

The HM84 is one of the best DLP's on the market. Have you done any adjutments of contrast/brightness etc. using a set up disk?
A proffesional calibration is nice but not a must have.

I thought mine looked good right out of the box and great now that I have tweaked it. I see you are in MA like me. I got the AVIA disk from the library. Also, INHD has a show most Sunday mornings real early called Tuneup. If you have a dvr record it and use that to adjust your pix. I also had Comcast come back a few times. Each time seemed to help a little and eventually they discovered a problem outside house w/ wiring and that really helped too. Keep working at it, something is not right.

If you wouldn't mind I would like to check out how you have it setup so I can try. I also forgot to mention I have it setup from the cable box with DVI to HDMI and I think that looks worse than Component and that should not be the case.

Couple of things, Technically there should be no difference between DVi or component BUT because each input on TV produces different results it can be one way or another.
NO 2 TVS have the same settings. If you want the best get a HT tuneup disk. For now though i would suggest turning down contrast and brightness.

No just down to a halfway point not all the way off. Generally most factory settings are on SPORTS. SPORTS has contrast setings at 100/80. Move user setting to Movie Look and what one has the lowest settings Movie or Standard and use that one.

I tried hooking up both via hdmi/dvi and component. Did not see a difference and w/ the HDMI setup you had to be careful how you turned TV/STB on/off or it would not synch up. That, coupled w/ the fact that I have an upcoverting DVD player, made me decide to hookup stb to tv via component.

The only stuff I get grainy images from are cheap DVD's and analog SD cable. The only stuff I get that is pixelated or macroblocked are cheap DVD's and some poorly compressed broadcasts. Sounds like poorly adjusted user settings?
It may not work on your set as there are many variances during production, but try the following just for grins.
Lamp=low,
color temperature=medium,
contrast=35,
brightness=50,
color=40,
tint/hue=-17,
sharpness=0
