Can anyone tell me how to successfully access the
PIP feature on the Hitachi 51UWX20b and what connections I need to make it happen?

There should be several pages in your operating manual that describe how to use it. There are usually buttons on the remote with labels like PIP, PP Ch, PIP Mode, Swap, Freeze, etc.

These buttons will bring up various types of POP modes. Once in them you can change channels, change inputs (so that you can even put your DVD player or STB in a POP, etc).

You need to experiment with these buttons using the operating manual as your guide.

One of the POPs is usually "highlighed" and this is the "active" picture. This is where you can change channels or inputs. You can then hit "swap" to make the other picture "active" and do the same with it. You can even compare a HD picture with DVD or SD.

Again, you can't hurt the TV with this, so try pressing some buttons. To turn POP off, you usually hit PIP.

Of course, to use POP, you need to have at least 2 inputs. One input can be the tuner, you actually have two analogue tuners, so that would work. Other inputs are whatever you have going into the back of your TV (DVD, STB, Etc.)

What are you using to supply the signal to your Hitachi?
If you are using cable and have a cable box the cable box is stopping all the channels from passing through to your TV tuner and only sending the channel that you have selected on the box. If you are using cable and do have this to access PIP you need to split the cable signal before it runs into the cable box. One end of this split will go to the cable box allowing you to access all of your channels (digital, analog, ppv etc) and the other will go directly into the input on the TV. The TV tuner will now recieve the unscrambled analog channels and allow you to do PIP/POP etc. If you are using cable without a cable box then as 57U said all you need to do is hit the corresponding buttons on the remote.

If you are using sattelite your TV's tuner cannot decode the Sattelite signal and the only thing you can tune is the sattelite signal being tuned by your sattelite reciever which is being converted to a signal your tv can use. In order to use PIP functions in this setup you need to have 2 sattelite recievers connected to different inputs using each sattelite reciever to tune each channel.

The SWX model I recently purchased only allows PIP when using a 1080i signal. Without 1080i signal, you can use the POP, SPLIT, and SURF, depending on the signal. There's a chart in owner's manual that shows what signals will work with which PIP functions. Pushing the PIP MODE button on remote will cycle you through the available modes for your selected inputs.
