View Full Version : 56 Point Convergence...

I finally had the courage to go into the service menu and do the 56 pt. convergence... How often should this be done? After I finished the convergence, I pushed 7 and it asked me to push touch-focus button, I ignored it and just pushed 7 again to get back into the service menu. Did I do this right, and does it over-ride the earlier 9 pt. convergence that I did when I first got the set a couple of months ago?
Thanks for any advise!

i just got my 42h82 and did SVM disable, E-Focus & service convergence...i am going to check mine once a month while it "breaks in", then if it seems stable, probably every 6 months.
it is said that hitting Touch Focus on some of the sets will screw up the work you just did (why anyone would release a product with a feature so counter-productive is beyond me)...
I noticed this the first time I did the convergence, i hit TF like it said, then an hr later went back into service convergence and it was almost as bad as when started :( - so i re-did it and hit 7 twice like you did and the settings are retained... my take is to hit 7 & exit, check it often & once it seems stable forget about touch focus, just touch up the service grid...
yes, the 9 point should look perfect after service conv., but it doesnt fix much when things are bad....
enjoy... :)

Thanks!
What is E-Focus? I have the 57hx81 and I'm not familiar with E-Focus...
I'm surprised somewhat that your touch-focus "undoes" the convergence. Perhaps because you didn't hit the touch-focus button as recommended the convergence was not put into the proper "memory" so when you use touch focus it undoes the convergence.
On my Hitachi, I did the convergence because it was way off, stored it properly to ROM and whenever the convergence drifts a bit (once a month or so), I hit my "magic focus" (same as touch focus I assume) and the convergence is excellent again.
I wouldn't say it's perfect, but it's not worth the trouble to go back into the 117 point convergence on my set and spend an hour or two with it. The convergence "drifts" ever so slightly as the set heats up anyway so, it's rarely perfect, but it is excellent.
I hear manufacturers say that you shouldn't use touch-focus (magic focus) too often. They recommend about once a month. Don't know why....

I think on Toshiba sets the TouchFocus does an automatic 9 pt. convergence. So no matter what you do in the Service Menu, it does the 9 pt. convergence when you hit the button, and over-writes whatever you just did? Just a guess!

After coming out of the 56 pt convergence, pushing TOUCH FOCUS programs that button to the convergence you just finished. This may take 3-4 times of re-doing the convergence to to get a good lock in the memory. You can then just hit TOUCH FOCUS when you see some drift.
56pt must be done for each input and each mode you use on that input. I recomend you start at FULL and then do TH1 after.
Remember DO NOT EVER touch 9pt again. I know that it mess's up your convergence and takes for ever to get it back. I did it.

on the XXH82's & newer, 56 point service convergence is only done once, the newer models hardware-scale to each input / aspect...

For those not yet using a Progressive- scan DVD player, make sure that you have DNR on. It is the switch to have 2:3 pulldown toggled off or on. Having it on will give you a 480p picture vs 480i eliminating many artifacts and jagged lines during fast motion scenes. Actually the DNR set to on will allow" line doubled(480p) viewing from NTSC sources"

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't Toshiba sets (xxhx81) upgrade to 540P, instead of 480P?

yes and cable TV looks very good compared to some other sets out there, there are some complaints about artifacts when watching progressive DVD, though h82's are better...

Tell me about it... I bought the sony 57hw40 first and I returned it after a week. Picked up the Toshiba 57hx81 for $200 less and 10X the picture quality, especially with analog signals!

can anyone tell me what svm dissable and e-focus are? and how I would do these features. is it in service menu?

The H80 and H81 series did not. You are correct 540p for the newer models.can anyone tell me what svm dissable and e-focus are? SVM is a artifical line edge enhancement. E focus is electronic focus.

do i dissable the svm by using movie settings?
and what about e focus? is that the same as convergence?
