I just got my 42h82 toshiba a few weeks ago. I have been visiting this site for a while and have found it really informative. I had to return my TV for a new one the other day. I heard a loud pop and the picture started to deteriorate after that. Anyways since I have my new one, I have been seeing people talk about the SVM feature lately and I was wondering what exactly that is?

Thanks Kevin

Scan Velocity Modulation is an electronic process that increased the edge definition on a TV.

The unfortunate side-effect of leaving SVM on, is that it tends to do too much "enhancing" and actually adversely affects the picture quality, especially if your signal is not that great to begin with (makes garbage "stink") (that's my comeback to "garbage in, garbage out" - sorry couldn't resist a little humour).

All properly calibrated TVs have the SVM turned off. Some TVs have this as a consumer menu item, some have it as a service menu item and some TVs actually have to have a wire disconnected from a circuit board - a fairly easy process, but it means touching the "guts" of your TV. I believe that the older Toshibas fall into the latter camp, but don't hold me to that.

ISF technicians turn all "automatic" TV settings to "off" because all they do is worsen the picture quality, by adding unneeded "interference".

You can turn yours off by starting in MOVIE mode than adjusting your contrast/color settings etc. Save your preferences and SVM will be off.

By MOVIE, don't you mean FILM? On my Toshiba (34hdx82) there is either a FILM or VIDEO setting, not movie. Just trying to clarify. Thanks.

No MOVIE on the front page istead of SPORTS. When ever you adjust something like color, tint, contratst ETC. start in MOVIE mode, it then automatically turns to prefered.
