View Full Version : Questions about side bars with 4:3 programming (57H84)

I just got a 57H84 a couple of days ago, and while I'm trying to get used to the stretched images from 4:3 sources, I'd prefer to watch 4:3 with sidebars, especially for video games with a lot of action. Will the use of the sidebars early on increase the chance of them becoming burned into the CRT's over time? I read through the FAQs that it takes about a month for a set to properly "burn in" to where it will display as desgined, and I was worried that use of the sidebars during this period would cause a problem.

Also, is there really a difference between having black sidebars and having gray sidebars? I figured Toshiba must have used gray for a reason, because it's considerably more distracting than black. Does gray decrease the chance of burn in, or will it just decrease the amount of damage done if burn in becomes a problem?

One more thing: I used to own a 51" 4:3 Panasonic SD, and in all my time of playing video games on the set, I never had a problem with burn in, even when playing the same game with the same static displays for weeks at a time. Consequently, I'm not as worried about burn-in from games as I am with these sidebars, as they're new to me. Are they more likely to do damage than static game images (assuming I use them as much as I played games) or do I really not have as much to worry about with them?

1. See the FAQ on Burn in. It is possible to get, but you do have to use games a lot or have the TV on the same channel for a long time, etc.

2. Grey bars mimic the phosphor wear of colour images better than black. Black is therefore more prone to burn in. However, even with grey bars you can get burn in at the interface between the grey bars and the image, if you watch too much 4:3.

3. Worry, no. Be aware, yes. Vary your viewing and you'll be fine.

If however, you watch nothing but 4:3 for many months, you will get burn in, I know this for a fact because it happened to me. So, vary your viewing and be aware, but not paranoid.
