Hello,
I have a Toshiba 57H82, and running the DVD's is a Panasonic dvd-rp62 prog. scan. I am using the component video cables. My question is, that when I watch any dvd, and it is in a slightly darker scene, it looks grainy or sort of like crystals! when there is a little darker scene and some white object comes on the screen, it looks like shimmering crystals also. The color and depth are fantastic still, and when the scenes are lighter it looks wonderful in all aspects! I have the dvd player set to prog. out, and the prog. out button on the front is enabled also. My tv is only about a week old so I have not really calibrated it yet. I did however turn the settings down(like contrast down to 40, and brightness down to 50, and sharpness down to 10) to get it out of "torch mode", but even when it was in "torch mode" it did the same thing. Will using AVIA get rid of this problem, or is there other fixes out there? Any help out there would be appreaciated!:)

Thanks,

Many DVD's show this grain. You have to remember that most of these are shot on film and then transferred on a digital medium. Sometimes it is fim grain, but you have the remember that it is inherent in the transfers. You just don't notice it on regular TVs because of the size and resolution difference. I think the only TVs where this grain is not so visible and still have the Progressive Scan are Plasma Screens since the refresh rates are so much higher on thise TVs.
