View Full Version : 57H84 Convergence Question (Newb)

I've had the set for 2 weeks now and I'm very happy with it except for the protective screen glare and an oversaturation of blue color. I found the guide on removing the stack on the 83 model but I'm not sure if it will work for the 84?
The blueish cast is evident when in manual convergence mode . . . all the white crosses have a distinct blue edge to them and i've also noticed during the 'Auto Focus' process that the blue vertical line is twice as wide as the horizontal blue (which seems to be uniform with all the red and green lines). It looks like I'll have to journey into the service menu to correct this problem but wondered which value I need to look for while in there? I copied and printed the value list from the 'sticky' which I'll use to note default settings before I change anything.
Btw, the store where I bought the set subs their work out to a repair shop that I've had dealings with in the past so that is not an option :nono2:
This forum has been a great help to me even just the short time i've spent lurking, to all who contribute!

Thanks for any help,
DN

A few things to note...
The blue will always bleed when looking at convergence grids and crosses. It's the nature of the beast. There's a technical explanation for it that's about a page long that I can't recall, but it's around. Tim may chime in with it.
Also, be aware that each set has different Service Menu level settings, so you're much better off writing down your own. The one's posted here would be a last resort for someone who DID NOT PAY ATTENTION TO ALL OF THE WARNINGS HERE ABOUT WRITING EVERYTHING DOWN BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING :)

You say that "The blueish cast is evident when in manual convergence mode."...is it evident during normal viewing? Don't convince yourself that you have a problem that might not really exist. Get a setup disc and go through that...it will show you how to set your color balance and give you the best possible picture short of having an ISF calibration done.

Good luck! :)

Ditto everything that Lob said. The blue CRT is fuzzier in general and will always be so. Have you done a service menu convergence yet? I think you'll find that eye opening in regards to how the red/bue/green CRT's interact, and may account for some of the bluish cast you're seeing.

Beyond that, I highly recommend that once you have ~ 200 hours on your set that you do both an electrostaic (E) focus and a manual (M) focus. This will likely make a dramatic effect on your picture quality. It will also help to tighten up the grid lines from the blue CRT. Be advised though: when focusing your set, you may want to avoid doing the E focus on the blue CRT, as doing so will have a significant impact on your grayscale. This can be good or bad depending on how your set looks right now. E focusing the red and green CRT's is fine. It is fine to do M focus on all 3 CRT's.

If all of the above is greek to you, just post back and we can help direct you to finding the steps to do all of the above.

Lobstah, Tim,
I'll definitely write down all the default settings for this set before altering any values, i just made a copy of the service code 'definitions' to place my settings by.

The blueish cast is 'slight' during normal viewing but noticeable to both the wife and I. I haven't done a service menu convergence or ran a setup disc, I'll do both before getting too deep into it. There's a reason those ISF guys make the big bucks :)

I'll make a note to adjust E & M focus soon. A guide link would be helpful though

Thanks for the help guys,
DN

The convergence won't really help with your "tint" issue...but the setup DVD will :)

You may find that you need to adjust color params at that point...not a big deal. My set had a green cast to it...thought I was imagining it at first, then the wiff mentioned it too, so I knew it wasn't just my eyes.

Greetings

Settings vary from set to set. It is supposed to be like that. They are individually fine tuned before leaving the factory.

Asking for someone's numbers is like asking for their combination lock number ... because you lost yours. They are meaningless to your set. They are no more correct than yours are ... but they could do damage if you blindly plug them in.

Toshiba sets typically have a purple magenta cast to them from the factory. The maker seems to like it like that.

Blue grid lines being fat are normal. Even if you tighten both E & M focus .. the blue will still be fatter than the other two. The three lines are not the same size and they are not supposed to be either. Red is thinnest ... then green then blue. If you make blue the same size as red ... you decrease the light output of the blue crt and make it work much harder than the other two guns ...

Then you will ask ... how come the blue crt fails so soon ... well duh ...? :)

Regards
