Greetings All....

First let me thank you in advance for being a wonderful information source. This is my first post.

Two weeks ago, i upgraded from a 36" Sony Wega to a Tosh 42hp84 plasma, after researching information online for MANY months. I found what I think is a good deal on a good plasma, but i seem to have some issues.

I have an STB Hi-Def cable box, running component video cables to the plasma for both DVD and cable box. All components are plugged into this huge Monster surge protector/power cleaner, which i never knew was necessary until i bought the plasma. Mostly the picture quality is excellent, but i notice a pronounced "flicker" usually when watching broadcast tv, but not on all stations, and have noticed it also when playing dvd's. The brightness seems to "bump up" a notch, as if i were playing with the settings, then back down again, and back and forth again, etc. I notice also that the contrast seems to waver from lighter to darker, shot to shot on whatever i'm watching. The odd thing is that it doesn't consistently perform this way, so i can't pinpoint if the problem is cable related (which Comcast claims it is not, but since i noticed this problem playing dvd's, i thought they might be right) or did I get a lemon of a plasma (please no!!! Not that!).

I have not calibrated this tv (perhaps I should?) but i am on the verge of calling Best Buy for service call.

BTW, my settings on this are as follows:

Contrast 60
Brightness 60
Color 40
Tint 0
Sharpness 60
Color Temp Medium
DNR (noise reduction feature) AUTO

If anyone can make some suggestions on how to move forward on this, I'd be extremely grateful....and if anyone has suggestions on my Settings Preference, I wouldn't mind hearing about them as well. This tv is something I'd like to keep in good working order for as long as possible, but if it's bad out of the box, I need to know.

Thanks for reading......JCDeano

I have a 65H84...never have had an issue with it.

Just now, as I write...watching the KU/OSU basketball game...I have the same flicker. The signal is coming through an HDTV receiver through component hookup. None of my other sources have this problem when switching.

In fact, this flicker is only occuring during the game, itself. I first thought it was just camera flashes on the players, etc. until I eyeingly watched different parts of the screen (like the sports score ticker) would be whited over...and it is continous, though random. The game is not in HD, but SD....the flickers go away when they cut to commercial.

Hopefully this is just a broadcast issue, since nothing else is flickering. My DirecTV, reg. ANT, PS2 (which is in the same Colorstream as my HDTV receiver via Mobile Authority auto-switcher), DVD, VCR...none of these has problems...even when I switch the channel from the game...those channels are fine too. Could be a broadcast issue.

I have just about the exact setup: 42HP84, Motorola 6200 STB w/Comcast, component video from STB and DVD, Monster HTS1000 surge protector/power cleaner. I have had everything setup for about a month and haven't seen what you have been seeing. At least I haven't noticed it. For the most part, the HD picture is incredible. What did happened last Friday and Saturday night was some freezing of the picture. I noticed the STB was not very responsive and the signal to my home theater receiver was also resetting. This leads me to believe it is something with the signal or STB. I've got Comcast coming in this week to check everything out. With regard to my TV settings, I ran the Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD. It wasn't all that easy to follow, but I ended up with the following settings:

Contrast 45
Brightness 35
Color 35
Tint G10
Sharpness 25

I set my Color Temp to Cool just because I liked that color scheme better than the others. I'm very happy with the HD picture as well as the SD picture. I watched a college hockey game the other day and was just wow'ed by the picture!

Hope this is helpful.

I have the same settings on mine for my STB (a bit different for my DVD setting) but set to Warm. I used DVE disc.

That flicker or change in brightness is definitely the program your watching. I've only seen it on ABC (Time Warner San Diego). All other HD stations have been perfect.

However on DVDs, I do see issues with people's faces having blotches on certain movies with dark scenes. Not sure how to deal with that...doesn't bother me so much though.

Can you all tell me where you bought your Toshiba's from and how that went?
