I just got my AVIA disk today and although it seems pretty helpful, I am curious as to a minor problem I had. When adjusting the sharpness with the test pattern I could not tell a difference whether it was set at 0 or 100. Is this normal? Also, all of the advanced test patterns where there isn't an audio tutorial, only text, how do you know what needs adjusted?

Thanks

The differences in the sharpness pattern is subtle. Look closely at the edges of the lines crossing the center and adjust the sharpness until the edges are their most clear. Also, you should see a smooth transition on the gradients, instead of a wavey pattern.

It's probably tougher to see on a CRT based TV due to the picture coming from 3 different CRT's. I can never get the gradients to look perfectly smooth to me.

Sharpness doesn't have much effect if you've got velocity modulation turned on. You need to turn it off, or down. Can't remember how that's done on Toshibas. On the newer ones it may be a menu item. On the older ones, you needed to cut a wire...

The difference between zero and 100 on my TV was "huge" and I believe a zero setting on the Toshibas makes the picture really soft. You may wish to look at a good feed instead of the test pattern and try numbers around 20-40?

40?

On most you can disable VM by having all your settings start with the Movie/Cinema mode. If that is your starting point, adjustments made become "preference" setting and retain the disabled VM.

On my 51H93, I noticed more of a difference in the black lines in the middle. Look for the false white lines next to them and lower Sharpness until they dissapear. I was surpised to find the best setting close to 50! Good job Toshiba.
