Hi. Last week I just bought a 57hx83 FLOOR MODEL.

When it was delivered, I discovered a slight burn-in on the top and bottom of the screen that look like the top and bottom bars when you watch a widescreen dvd.

The store (Leon's) will not repair the TV since burn-in's are not covered under manufacturers warranty. They are offering a refund, or an exchange for another TV.

My question is, should I exchange the TV for a 57h84 for an extra $100, or should I pay to have the green and blue tubes replaced out of my own pocket?

BTW, I can't exchange for another 57hx83 because the model is discontinued.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I would absolutely exchange it. I would never buy a floor model TV. They run in torch mode for about 12 to 14 hours a day.

The Sears store near where I work has a 57H84 on display (been there for a few months). Anyway, each time I walk by it, it is showing 4:3 video with the bars down each side and is in torch mode. I just mentioned it to the sales guy but he didn't even care. No doubt that someday, they will give someone a modest discount and sell it. That TV is screwed for sure.

So, TVs are basically abused in most stores that the employees there don't usually know or care about it. Stay away from floor models for sure.

Yep, like seadragon said, do the exchange.

BTW, If you were going to do the tube replacement, you'd want to replace all 3 tubes in a situation like this, and the total cost to do so would likely be near the original purchase price you paid for the floor model.

Better yet, have them either do the exchange without paying the additional $100, or get a refund. You're due a little pain and suffering on this one, unless it was made clear to you upfront that it was possible the set could have a burn in problem.

100 dollars vs 900 -NEVER buy a floor model-only misguided souls purchase them. Be greatful that you have an opportunity to exchange for the NEW tv. Run don't walk back to that store.

You might want to change your log in name to something better once you get rid of the "lemon"

Shame it's damaged, they are nice TV's, I'd have to agree with these guys, take that sucker back and get something else. It's sad the store is even trying to sell it in the first place.

General consensus! Worth the 100 bucks for new.

Yep, new in box is better than an overworked floor model. The Cinema Series may have a few better features, but most of them won't be missed. You will also get HDMI instead of DVI as well.

General consensus! Worth the 100 bucks for new.

Ok, I spoke to the manager today. I tried to push him to have the store pay for the repair (before I read your replies). He said that the company they use for repairs was quoting him over $1000 for the replacement of the 3 tubes. He said that at that price, it was not worth it to the store to eat the cost. He said that he was going to talk to the repair company again to see if they will give him a better deal on the repair cost. If he can get the repair at a low enough cost, he will consider repairing the TV, otherwise he will give me a refund on the set. He's going to get back to me on Friday.

I also mentioned to him that if the repair is not an option, that I would like him to replace the TV with a 57hx84(not the 57h84), the current cinema series. I doubt that he will agree since the 57hx84 is $600 more than what I paid.

After reading your replies, I'm not sure that I want the repair even if he does offer to replace the tubes...

So my question is this: If they replace the tubes, isn't the TV as good as new again?

The whole reason that I initially preferred the repair is because the 57hx83 has the Pegasus guns with superior pic quality... So they say...

The new 57hx84 doesn't use the Pegasus guns.

Any insight on this issue? 57hx83 vs 57hx84 vs 57h84?

If you can I would go for the HX model. Figure it this way: $1000 for new CRTs or $600 for the HX84. The store saves $400 not to mention their markup. So they would really be coming out ahead.

But then I wonder. Why did Toshiba drop using Pegasus? Did they have more problems? Are they more susceptable to burn-in? Regardless push for the HX in my opinion. Remind the manager of the savings vs. repairing your set and that the replacement set does not have as quality CRTs as the current set.

**I pasted the following from the other forum I write on... no need to type it out twice!**

I just spoke with the manager again today.

He told me that the repair would cost $860, and that Leon's would cover $500 of the repair. So I would have to pay $360 to have the TV repaired.

Otherwise, he would give me a refund, and $100 off of the 57hx84($2700 -$100 + tax = $2990 retail). So, I would have to pay another $540 to exchange for the 57hx84.

I argued that they should take the $500 for the repair and apply it to the new TV, but the manager wouldn't budge.

I was not very pleased with these options.

I called Leon's head office "customer service" - and I use that term lightly -, and the head man there told me that if I didn't like those options that I would have to write a letter to Terry Leon, owner of Leon's. He gave me his PO box address. lol.

So now I will be writing my letter to see if Mr. Leon will agree to apply the $500 toward the new set.

They did offer to give you a full refund. With all that is going on with this deal, this looks like a good time to take your money back and walk away from the table.

Look around, there are plenty of places where you can get the same Toshiba or maybe a choice offering from Hitachi for a similar price.

I'd have to agree... You made the mistake of buying a damaged floor model and they are willing to refund your money or pay towards repairs, I wouldn't push my luck. I don't think I'd wanna deal with a place that would try and sell a TV in that shape to begin with either...
