Does anyone have one of the new Samsung DLP sets? What do you think of it?

I like the fact they are light and not very deep, however, with Gateway now offering 42" plasma at $2999, I wonder if the DLP is worth the $$$.

cj, welcome to the forum.

1. See --> This link (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1580&highlight=Wega) for some recent discussion on this set.

2. Here's --> Another Link (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=lnzz1DPtkEvz7w4mlob533z9-wYlPGgIw2k=?CatalogCategoryID=Tf8KC0%2eNkVoAAADxF_5RHlfJ&ProductID=VRAKC0%2eNcIwAAADx6A5RHlfN&Dept=tv&Boutique=wega) to the Sony Wega (be careful, the new one is the one you want, they are clearing out the old one at higher prices than the new one - yep, that's what I said alright) A friend of mine bought the 60" and had it delivered this week. I'll report back on it, once I see it.

3. The Gateway plasma is not HDTV. It's only 480P. Not bad, but not HDTV.

Since you're new to the forum, check out our FAQ section (6th one down on the home page).

Yeah, I figured the Gateway was too good to be true. Thanks for pointing that out. Nevertheless, it heralds a new price point for the technology. What I really want is a TV that rolls up like a miniblind (non front projection). I know stuff like that is in the works, but how far out is anybody's guess.

I saw the Samsung 50" DLP on display at Best Buy and it has a breathtaking picture. However I dont know the setup best buy employed for their showroom because the other HDTVs broadcasting the same image right next to the DLP looked bad, perhaps they were giving the DLP all the power since they are really pushing the new model??

I've had the Samsung HLM507W for a couple months now. Love the high-def picture (HDTV, HBO HD, Showtime HD and local digital/hi-def network affiliates.) In addition, DVD's look great (although much better after I upgraded my DVD player to a progressive-scan model.)

The set looks good during the day, in bright light...awesome with the light dimmed down...and has a pretty good viewing angle (although viewing from a higher or lower angle decreases its brightness.)

My only complaint is that NTSC signals don't look so great, but it really varies from channel to channel. I have DirecTV, and for some reason, one of my favorite channels (ESPN) looks awful at times. I've heard its their signal and the compression scheme they use to broadcast...but if there was one channel I'd want in Hi-Def, it would be ESPN. Maybe it looks better on cable...definitely looks better on other sets.

All-in-all, I'd recommend it if the bulk of your viewing is going to be hi-def programming and DVD's. Pair it up with one of Samsung's Hi-Def receivers (the model SIR-T160 if you have DirecTV.) Set-up is easy with that pairing.

Feel free to write back if you have any more questions about the unit.

My 437 is 2 1/2 months old and has been trouble free. I am enjoying an awesome picture.

There have been problems reported in the AVS forum with some of the sets. Since most people only report problems on these forums it is hard to tell what the failure rate is.

By the way 57U there has been a proportionate amount of failures with the GW II reported on that forum also. Namely bad pixels, out of focus images and other issues,

Some people prefer the look of the DLP and some prefer the GW. It is recommended that you view each of these sets in the store before you buy either. Or even better take one home on a 30 day trial and try it out with your equipment.

The DLP is almost half the depth of the sony wega as well, so it won't stick out as far if that's an issue.

The Sony GW is 21.4" deep. The Samsung DLP is 17.6, that's <4" difference, making the DLP 82% as deep, not quite 50%. Are you in marketing? ;)

oops, I chose the wrong sony TV. Your link above didn't work, so I chose the biggest wega xbr that was displayed on the sony tv page this one was about 32" deep:

KV-40XBR800 40" FD TrinitronŽ WEGAŽ XBRŽ Hi-ScanŽ TV with Free SU-40XBR8 Stand
KV40XBR800KIT

I had to do a search for the specific model # you mentioned as it was not displayed in the Sony XBR TV page.

No, I'm not in marketing.
