hey all,
im getting my tv delivered on monday. now, the guy at the sears said that the mitsus they have in the store on display come out of the box looking like that, and that they dont have anyone do any calibrations on them. well if thats true they look pretty damn good to me. anyways, i guess i should get a hold of the avia disc, but my question is when i run this disc, should i set it to the movie or theatre (not sure what mitsu calls it) setting to run the avia? im guessing that since im only doing it on this one setting being theatre or movie, would other modes like stretch for when im watching regular 4:3 tv keep the same color etc. settings?
basically, will the other modes keep the settings i change for the movie modes? i just dont know what to run the avia in. i know i should turn off all the automatic features before running the avia.
also, since i am running this through my dvd, wouldnt it be better to just do the 64 point convergence (r,g,b) from the advanced settings? this would be directly done via the tv, and not from the dvd input.
obviously im a newb to the rptv realm.
thanks for your patience!

When I first got my 55859 right out of the box mine didn't look very good. I first let the tv play for about an hour or so and then I did the 64 point converg. Then I turned of all of the enhancments like blak enhancement ect.. off. I then switched the color temp to low or 6500K and then image type to film and video noise to standard. Then I did the calibration with the avia disc. The results turned out great for me. It may very from set to set so just keep in mind what turned out ok on one persons may look bad on another. Anyway after about three months I did it one more time and it changed just a little but it should be ok untill next year this time now. The settings carried over to each type of format such as standerd, expans , zoom, ect... at least on mine they did. The only thing that takes time is each input has to be done seperate. So ounce you have done your DVD input you have to go to the next input and carry over the settings again. Ounce they are all set then your done. I just carried over the sam info from dvd to my others and it seemed to be ok the cable input I had to ajust a little dif. because the cables channels were alittle to dark. Well hoped this helped some and hope things go great for you. If anyone else out their has some better suggestions to go along with what I gave him please let him know.
Kraven:
Do your adjustments in the "movie" mode. The stretch modes will not change your settings, as long as you leave your TV in movie mode. If you switch to another mode (sports perhaps - don't know the other modes on Mits) then the settings may not have been "transferred over" to this mode. If they did not get transferred, you'll see the major difference between this mode and movies.
As for the convergence - aiming the guns is important to how good the TV looks (to prevent colour fringes, etc), however, this is a totally separate issue from the setup done by AVIA. Convergence should usually be done using an NTSC signal (TV signal). This should be described in the users manual.

thanks for the replys, you guys are true champs-
well, i got the tv and let it run for an hour and half, then did the convergence. it wasnt too bad actually, it didnt need much tweaking. as for the modes, i only have 2 right now as i only have a dvd player going through regular rca jacks on my input one channel. but i turned off all automatic features, and i changed the color to 6500k on both channels. this gives a more theatre look to me. i have the color set to about 1/3 potential and the contrast at about 10% on both input 1 and regular coax cable inputs. they both look good. i need to buy the avia disc asap!
circuit city only sells them online but they are $39.00 us. my tv does have only a few settings for format, like standard, stretched, normal 4:3 (grey bars on side), zoom, and expanded.
i really only like the standard. stretched is too annoying for me. i do notice that most movies will still have the black bars on the top and bottom even though the dvd payer is set for 16:9. i guess this is the movie though, not the player or the tv. another thing that sucks is that every channel has a freaking logo in the lower right hand these days!! wtf! i guess im just paranoid. ill leave the contrast settings to the avia disc. i understand that the avia needs to be done on each input channel, but how do i do it for the coax input for my normal cable? i dont have a box, its just a coax coming from the wall.
thanks again,
you guys are extremely helpful.

Yeah with movies that are in like 1.85:1 it will fill the whole screen but for movies that are in 2.35:1 their will be still some black lines on top and bottom. I have noticed also that certain movies that are in 2.35:1 show up differently on the TV also for some reason. Like we watched Anastasia tonight and the black line was about 4 to 5 inches thick on top and bottom but with Star Wars Eps. 1 it's also in 2.35:1 but the black lines are only about 3 inches thick. So the picture is a little taller. I always have it in standard mode so I don't know what would cause that if any one knows please let me in on it. I expect dif. aspect ratios to show up dif. on the screen but the same one being dif. puzzles me. Anyway glad you got your TV set up and I hope you have many years of enjoyment out of it. Oh yeah and the logos do get annoying.

my guess is that Anastasia was not enhanced for widescreen TV's. For instance I have the Fist full of dollars dvd w/ widescreen not enhanced. In order to see it correctly I have to use the mode that stretches the image vertically.
That is because the widescreen was made to be view in 4:3 mode not 16:9, therefor has more black space on the letterbox.
