Most TVs don't display that information. Some do when you press the "info" button, but yours may not have that option.

See the FAQ on "HDTV Formats". There is no 720i.

You can also check your users manual of the TV and/or the HD receiver to see what the infomation capabilities may be, if any.

The TV will display ALL formats in either 540p or 1080i...

In the menu system under Picture Settings - Theater Settings - Display Format, you can select either 540p or 1080i. This setting applies only to how 480p signals will be upconverted by the TV.

All other signal formats are automatically converted to 1080i.

I could be wrong, but I think what he is looking for is how he can 'display' what format the program is 'broadcasted'.

If that's the case, it's probably easiest to look it up online...TitanTV.com, or one of the other HD listing sites. If the question truly is "What is it being displayed as?", then OvalNut is right on the money...if it's broadcast, it's 1080i on that set, unless you set the box to output 480p, where you can select between 540 and 1080.

...or,
All HD is broadcasted at 1080i, except FOX, ESPN-HD and ABC which is 720p. All standard definition is 480i.

...or,
All HD is broadcasted at 1080i, except FOX, ESPN-HD and ABC which is 720p. All standard definition is 480i.Depending on your service provider, this may not be totally correct. Some service providers "change" the format. See the FAQ on HDTV formats.

1. Starchoice is all 1080i, I believe Shaw is the same.
2. Some PBS stations are 720P.
3. Some stations that "share" a tower will "violate" the "rule".
Etc.

I should have qualified that with a 'YMMV' depending on your local stations and/or cable provider.

Or... Generally, all HD is broadcasted at 1080i, except ...
:)

And just to clarify, to Ratman's earlier point, I just checked the owner's manual and tried playing with the remote buttons on my 57HX93 to no avail. Doesn't seem there is a way to get the TV to display a message indicating the current signal format.
