Hi, all
First of all, great forum, i am glad i found this place.
I recently purchased a 51H93, however it does not work with discrete remote codes, I am aware of a firmware upgrade avaliable from toshiba to fix this problem and other minor issues. I was wondering if anyone still have the firmware, and if so, would you please be kind enough to email it to me. Thank you in advance!

Thanks for your help, i have successfully upgraded my TV set. Everything works great. If anyone else still need the firmware, send me a PM or email. Thank you!
Yi
darkzx, I sent you an e-mail. I would love to get a copy of the firmware. My system seems to lock up once in a while, every month or two, and I have to reset the system. It also takes 7-10 seconds for the built-in tuner to tune-in when going from the PBS HD channel to another channel.
I am hoping that the newer firmware can fix these issues.
Is there a place on the web where we can get firmware and instructions on updating the firmware. I could not find it on Toshiba.com.

Can someone PM me or E-mail, mraarone at yahoo dot com, me the SOFTWARE UPDATE and how to install it to the 65H93? Is there a feature list?
Here's why I think need it:
I've recently bought the 65H93, and I've noticed just about 3 things I do not like about the TV that may have to do with the firmware/softawre version (small things, they do not outway the quality of daily use).
1. DVI Input from my computer: The projector doesn't sync with the standard 16:9 1024x900~ resolution, and on top of that, the output extends passed the plastic frame so the screen can not fit unless special hardware is purchased.
2. I haven't figured out how to sort TV stations by number in the TV Guide, that's a simple one, but very frustrating. It'll sort alphabetically, or by movie genre, but not by number?! Is ther e a way around this?
3. There is also a small amount of 60Hz/Power resonance in all including 1080i DVD streams, and it makes these ugly horizontal bars. Its likely that I have dirty power, but I don't like that even in an unprocessed viewing mode such as 1080i or 740p, I still get the bars.

Won't help with 1 or 3...and doubtful with 2, in my opinion.
The DVI connection from your computer will require PowerStrip s/w...check AVS forum for that one.
For the 60hz issue...fix your power problem :)

3. Sounds like a ground loop issue, you need to investigate your electrical problem... If you have cable, disconnect it from the TV and any STB's it might be on and see if the problem stops. If it does your cable isn't grounded correctly.

If you have the software file, you store the file on one of the compatible memory cards (SD or SM). Put the card in the reader (front panel) and it automatically updates. I have the firmware for the h93/hx93, but I doubt it is the same for the HX83. Maybe someone else here can help you out. If nobody replies or PMs you, ask for it in a new thread.

Sorta off-topic, but I've always wondered how firmware upgrades are done on devices like TV, OTA HD receivers, and so on. I saw the posts about memory-card readers but lots of devices don't have those. Other than having it done at a service center, how's it done ??
billbillw
06-06-2005, 01:59 PM
Most devices are not upgradeable.
I've heard of upgrades through memory cards, CDs, serial port connections to a computer, and satellite download. Without one of those options, I doubt there is any way to upgrade, unless the service center has some specialized equipment that can write to the flash rom, but I've never heard of that actually occurring.

Hello Everyone. Glad I came across this thread. Billbillw or anyone else..Would you please send me the updated firmware for my 51h93. at yardy0@lycos.com. I assume I save it to a SD card and just insert it in my tv. I'm having problems picking up some of the HD channels on my Qam tuner. I have comcast cable and I poick up CBSHD, WBHD and TNTHD fine but cant seem to lock onto to FOXHD or ABCHD. I have to use an over the air antenna to pick up those.
I'm hoping this may fix it. Exactly what issues does the upgrade fix?
billbillw
08-06-2005, 09:04 AM
Yardy,
File sent. The only fix that I saw with this update was related to how the tuner handles the PSIP data. I had one local channel that was messed up because of this. Its hard to explain, but the image was distorted and the audio didn't match. After the update, it worked fine. The update also helped the tuner identify the correct virtual channel numbers. I don't really think it will improve your reception on those channels, but give it a try.
I should also mention that there are definetly newer firmwares available from Toshiba. The one I have is more than a year old. You can probably get Toshiba to send the newer version to you if you call support.

Hi,
I too have a 57H93. It routinely freezes when the digital signal drops for more than 5 seconds. The only way to unfreeze the picture is to do the factory reset from the menu or to use the front panel hard reset. Very frustrating. I contacted Toshiba about an official firmware upgrade and they told me there was none. Thanks!!
billbillw
10-17-2005, 06:14 PM
tdyne,
What version of firmware do you have installed? Is it older or newer than the one mentioned above?
Your problem sounds unique. The only time I had problems like that was when PSIP info was changing. A rescan usually fixed it. Have you rescanned your digital channels lately?
Edit: I noticed that the firmware version was never mentioned in the thread above. The version that I have been sending is 1.4.3, dated 5-5-04. I know for a fact that there is a later version because a service tech installed one for me during a visit, but I wasn't able to get a copy of that version.
tdyne
10-18-2005, 08:41 AM
Hi,
The firmware version is 1.1.1 sept 2003. The rescan doesn't unfreeze the screen, only a reset, and I then have to rescan after the reset just to get the hd channels back.
Thanks.

Hi billbill,
Upgrade worked great. It has removed the freeze issue and there are a couple other improvements I've noticed in the 10 minutes playing with it. Most notable is ths autoprogram speed and apparent improvement in locking on digital signals. I'll try again tonight when the signal strength is weaker. I'm also hoping convergence and focus will improve, will try that later and report any change noticed here.
Thanks Again for sending that along!! Now I think I'll email toshiba service back with a note that thier non-existant firmware upgrade seemed to have fixed the problem. I'll ask for a more recent version while I'm at it.
Thanks.
billbillw
10-18-2005, 11:05 AM
Glad it helped.
Don't count on any improvments in focus/convergence. That is pretty much independent of the Siene software.
Focus can be improved slightly by manually tweaking the "focus" trimpots behind the front cover and by adjusting the focus rings for each CRT. I wouldn't recommend this if you are not familiar with the internals of your set and comfortable tweaking these things. There is a real risk of screwing things up (You can see what happened to Brad here (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=21902) in his recent posting in this forum)
Convergence on the H93 TVs can be greatly improved by doing a service menu convergence adjustment. This is very tedious and there is a slight potential for screwups there as well, but the risk is worth it IMHO. I noticed great improvements in my picture quality after doing a service level convergence adjustment. On the H93 TVs, you are limited to 9 point convergence in the User Menus, but you can get 56 point with a grid in the service menu.
I have the Service Manual for your TV in electronic format. If you are interested in doing some of these tweaks, I can probably send it to you if the file isn't to big. Beware though, sometimes the S/M is not 100% accurate and it takes a little common sense and care to figure out where it is wrong.

Wow, that sounds great. I'd love to give it a try. I have a 4 year extended warrenty so I could always just put a call in. BTW, The Toshiba customer service folks still insist there are no firmware upgrades for th H93,
" Thanks for writing!
I apologize for the inconvenience.
There is no firmware upgrade available for the '93 series TVs.
Try resetting your unit by unplugging it from the electrical outlet for at least three minutes. If you continue having difficulty, I recommend having an authorized service center look at your unit.
To find a service center in your area, please follow this link:
http://www.tacp.com/service/servcntr.nsf/$$Search?OpenForm
For further assistance, please contact our Customer Service Department at
1-800-631-3811.
Toshiba Customer Service"
As for changes, after a couple hours, the HD reception has improved a lot, still no freezes, many more channels with the same antenna. Very happy.
So glad there are folks in the know, like yourself, willing to help out.
Thanks again.

tdyne,
You have to CALL Toshiba to get the update. Stay on the phone until they give it to you. I checked, the Service Manual (not including the schematics) is about 4MB. If your email can handle that, I'll send it.

Hello,
I have a 65H93 and it seems to take a while just to change channels. I am talking about just regular cable channels. Not switching between HD and Regular TV (That takes a long time also). Would this firmware fix that? If so, can someone email it to me at pareshnj@yahoo.com and instructions on how to install it.
Thanks in advance

My 57H93 set has trouble switching from Digital OTA back to composite input. I think the newer firmware would help. Currently it says I have Software version 1.3.5 Oct 2, 2003, FW:2.1. Could someone e-mail me the new firmware peskypescado at gmail dot com.
Also, I read something about a "service menu convergence adjustment" I really have a problem with the convergence in the bottom corners of my screen that can't be corrected with the user level convergence. How could I do this service menu convergence? If you have to e-mail me info on this sent it to my gmail address.
Thanks,

When I switched to ver. 1.4.3, my 57H93's tuner stopped locking up. I use to have to push the reset button or unplug the tv every time I was watching HD programing over the air.
Channels like PBS HD (28 here in Los Angeles) still drift (do not stay programmed). After tuning in to another HD channel, pressing 28.1 just stays with the previous channel showing. I type in 59.1 to obtain the PBS HD channel, but that only locks up the tuner to PBS HD. I then have to rescan the channels at ANT 1 to unlock the tuner.
Anyone else get this problem? Anyone have a fix?

Before my H93 died, I had the 1.4.4 update done to it by a service tech. I couldn't see any improvement over the 1.4.3 version. Of course, it wasn't long after that (a month maybe) when the set was "repaired" into non-working status.

I just get an error message that it will not accept the update. I am wondering if my SmartMedia cards are not formatted correctly and the TV can't read the files. Hmmmmmm...... They work fine in my Olympus 460 and in my computer.

Try erasing everything on it and just leave the update file. Just in case I will resend the file to you. :pop222:

bdhull,
The same thing happened with my Smartmedia card. It worked the second time.
The second time I copied it and right clicked on the update file on the Smartmedia card and clicked eject. My written instuctions had mentioned to do this.
If this doesn't work, try the SD slot if would have the proper card.
Hope this helps. Doc

Norcuron,
Sorry you are on the wrong place :headb: , all we have is for the H93 model but call Toshiba (800-631-3811) if they have a newer version the should be able to ship it for free to you.
kermane,

You cannot use the H94 software on an H93 unit. The hardware is different.

It looks like the latest version of 57H93 firmware is 1.4.4. I've experienced the channel lock-outs on low signal HD stations that many have described. If this firmware will fix this problem I will be very excited. I've never upgraded a TV so this is a new one. I normally use xD cards for my cameras but I can borrow an SD card if necessary. Could someone forward the latest firmware and service manual to (johndavidrocha@gmail.com)... much thanks.

I have been reading the posts hear and would like to get the software upgrade. I have 1.4.3 and 2.1 so I am not sure if 1.4.4 will do much. I still have to reset my TV every 3 or 4 months because I loose my HD chs. This last time it said low signal strength .But after a reset everything was back to normal. Also I am trying to find a list to convert Toshiba Ch’s to cable box Ch’s IE 81-1 to 369 or what ever it is I have Comcast
Thanks in advance Lee Gamex2000@comcast.net

I allready sent the firmware to the last requests, sorry again for the delay but I've been getting late out of work and don't have too much time I hope that this firmware solves part of the issues, but regarding the low signal strength i think that comcast is also to blame for because I loose the HD channels but also some of the analog channels look like crap. :headb: So check them maybe what we might need is a signal amplifyer for digital cable. BY the way billbillw could you send me the service manual? I'm curious about it, thanks in advance.

Then I saw this forum.

Hi all!
I own a used 57h93. The Software Version screen shows that I am running 1.1.2 FW: 2.1. PM has been sent to kermane.
I am hoping that a firmware upgrade will get the TV Guide working along with improving HD channel reception on my local OTA channels through Comcast Extended Basic. Currently I can only receive NBC and ABC.
Is there any sort of list that shows what the HD channels would be on the Toshiba tuner for CBS, FOX, CW, etc? I know that NBC and ABC are 1-1 and 2-1 respectively. Channels 3-1, 4-1 etc. only give me a low signal strength message.

Oops. My TV is a 51 not 57. I don't see as how that could make a difference in firmware, but thought it worth a mention.
Also, stupid me doesn't have a card reader/writer. Can I use the firewire ports to update the firmware or should I suck it up and buy a reader/writer or find someone that has one?

Great site! Wish I would have found this years ago. I have a 57H93 1.1.1 FW 2.1. Think it is time for an update. It is almost unbearable to watch OTA broadcasts, channels change stations, Guide quit working(might not be transmitting), images freeze but keep sound. Resetting it at least once every 2 weeks now.

Has anyone ever thought of contacting Toshiba directly for the newest FW??? I know...crazy idea but...it just may work!!! ;)
frkay
08-21-2008, 04:54 PM
Splicer - Yep - sure have, but based on past notes in this area - they may try to claim they don't have one and you'd have to clang on their cage bars to get them to admit they have one - and its a whole lot less frustrating to wait for emails or online responses than to sit and wait on the phone while trying to do something else. :headb:
frkay
08-25-2008, 07:13 PM
Given that Splicer cracked my knuckles for being lazy, I went and took a closer look at the Toshiba TV customer support site - lo and behold, they have firmware update 1.4.5 posted. That's the most recent Version I've noted in anyone's posts. If there is a more recent version actually available it would be cool to hear about it - but if not, the download is there and is actually easy.
Cheers!
frkay
09-25-2008, 02:33 PM
OK - I downloaded and installed (twice) the 1.4.5 FW update from Toshiba for my 51H93. It didn't make any difference past about the first day. Now, as in the past, every time I change from a digital channel to an analog channel and then attempt to go back, the digital channel has gone bye-bye and I get some other channel in its place - often a Mexican channel since I live near the border. The problem is most egregious on the local PBS channels, but I also get it on the commercial channels. It seems like the whole system locks onto a Mexico HD channel (often channel 7) and that's all I get on almost all of the digital channels. I have to go to install and channel scan and didgital signal to get the Digital channels back. It works doing that, but it sure is frustrating.
If anyone has a fix I'd sure like ti hear about it. Maybe it will all get better after February when there aren't any analog channels to confuse the firmware.
