was wondering if anybody could tell me the exact screen size of the 42h82 or the 50h82. i would like to make a mock up of the screen in my living room so i can decide what size i need between the 50h82 and the 42h82. thank you.

The 50" would be roughly 25"H x 44" W.

The 42" would be roughly 21" H x 36" W

Doesn't anyone remember Pythagorus?

9 squared, times 16 squared, equals 18.4 squared.

Therefore the ratio between height, width and diagonal are 9:16:18.4, now break out those calculators.

Don't forget to move your mockup out from the wall. The cabinet depth for the 50" is about 22", while the 42" is 3" less deep. I'm assuming you don't need the calculator for that one...;)

Pythagorus -Isn't he the still looking for an honest man:D I guess that is a different Greek.

Go for to 50 inch
50inch Unit Dimensions (W x H x D):
46-1/8" x 50-3/8" x 21-2/3"
42 Cabinet Dimensions (W x H x D):
39-3/8" x 46-1/2" x 18-2/3"

thanks guys, i appreciate it. right now i have the funds to go to the store right now and take home the 42", but i am wondering if the 50" will suit my living room any better. if it does(which i know it will), looks like i may have to wait another month or so to gather more funds. thanks again for the algebra schooling. btw, as i sit here listening to howard sterns rerun show of 9/11/01, i just want to say  F$#% bin laden F$#% bin laden F$#% bin laden. Thank you NYPD and FDNY, God Bless the families and friends of the victims of 9/11, and RIP victims of 9/11.

Just a thought, but scour the Internet for prices, then go to Sears and try to get a price match..the 43 is way to samll for a living room TV..I have a 50inch that was immense at first, now I somtimes I wish I had bought the 57..They seem to shrink with use:D

thanks kevin, getting the price match at sears was actually what i had planned on doing after reading some of your older posts. let me ask you, does sears match just the internet price of a tv, or do they match the internet price + shipping. i tried for a price match at best buy and they said they would only match my best internet price + the cost of shipping to my door, which is still cheaper than best buys price. btw, kevin, is that a toshiba 50"? and if so, how do you like it?

Yes it is the The Toshiba 50h81 .. As for the shipping prices hard to tell but I had them match a Home Theater in Box from a Citicorp members only catalog. They did not add the shipping price and then gave me another 10% off the matched price because it was an early shopper sale. I saved about 170 off the Sears's retail price.

I also bought my tv from them- open box returned because it was to small- 1495.00 plus tax about a year ago. Got lucky

What Toshiba Screen sized would you get for a 17-18feet viewing area?

thanks

If that's the distance from the screen, you should get the largest RPTV available - 65" or larger. You could also consider a projector/screen combination.

I view my 61" from about 12-14' (I have a chair that I can move easily).

Some people say 2.5-3.0 times screen height, but I find that a "little large", especially for watching anything but the best possible signals. (perhaps that "rule-of-thumb" was for 4:3 sets.)

What size would you reco. from 6-9 feet?

47-50 inch is great at 10-12
43-47 for the 6-9 ft. range should be ok

6 feet is CLOSE

i agree kevin about the tv shrinking, i got my 50h82 a couple of weeks ago and sometimes i wish i got the 57h82, but i'm very happy with the 50.
btw: i sit about 12 feet from mine, and i could definetly go bigger.

I'm thinking the 42 is the way to go. From 9 feet away our 27 inch toshiba looks just fine....I can only imagine what 42, let alone 50inch looks like.

potentially people could be sitting as close as 6 feet, so the 50 would be way too big.

Thanks for the imput.

Looks like we've got a consensus of about 2.0 - 2.5 times screen size, not screen height.
