:) I just purchased a Toshiba HDTV 57HDX82 TV - I am now looking at getting an HDTV receiver - I have looked at the RCA DTC 100, but notice a statement "may not work with all TV's" This unit requires a VGA input on the
TV. Is this unit OK for this TV - will it work, or can I do better with another brand of HDTV receiver ? Thanks for any help provided. skyman

You would need a cable that has vga on one end and component on the other.
The big question is how do you get your channels now. Is HD available in your area over the air with an antenna or through your cable company?

Do you want DISH or Direct?

All STB's are able to access Direct except for certain Samsung boxes wich are OTA only. Dish uses a different box, the 6000 but you still need an module to obtain OTA channels.

All HD on satelite is a premium subscription except for HDnet. Your locals would not be sent to you in HD by the provider even though you may be able to get them with an antenna on your roof.

Thanks for the reply KEVINW - I use DIRECT Sat.
and cable for locals here. I am up here in Canada and just want to make sure that this receiver will work with this TV. I am not too woried about the locals - I just want to be able to see HD when it is broadcast. Are you aware if one can get such a cable that has VGA on one end and component on the other ? Thanks for your help. skyman

One Canadian to another...I am very happy with Bell ExpressVu other than they have only 4 channels of HD available right now but will have 10 - 16 channels with the launch of Nimiq II in the 1st quarter of 2003. Rumours have it that Discovery HD theatre and HDNet will be included. You can get the OTA adapter for the model 6000 receiver and you are set.

If you prefer, go with your cable company, which I assume is Videotron. I wouldn't bother with OTA HDTV equipment in Montreal at this point as there is going to be several years before there is any real content available from MTL stations. If you are within signal range of US stations, however, I still believe that the ExpressVu 6000 with the OTA adapter is the right choice.

Kingsclear, I know you are already visiting a similar site in Canada, but Skyman, if you are not aware of it, please come visit:

Digital Home Canada (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forums/index.php)

Skyman, you may wish to check when your cable company will have HD available. Rogers in Toronto is a leader in this regard and I'm sure that no company in Canada can afford to allow themselves to be left behind...

True...I visit Digital Home Canada a lot. What Rogers has in the Toronto area is just that...in the Toronto area. In New Brunswick Rogers has 1 channel of HD and only in Moncton. They will be adding more so I am told as their rebuild continues. I expect to have access to digital cable by next month but I am not interested in it at all. I am, however, interested and will be subscribing to their high speed internet service. I live out in the country and didn't expect to have cable internet until maybe 2010. For them to have this area almost ready now is a very pleasant surprise.

On a national basis, Bell ExpressVu will be the best choice. Star Choice is just trouble. The only thing I miss by being on Bell ExpressVu is MSNBC Canada but that is a small price to pay.

I have been asking Bell ExpressVu again and again to use channel 285 for overflow HD programming from the US Nets until the new satellite is up and running. TMN/MC are not making full use of the channel. It is also possible for ExpressVu to record HD programming and show it at different times such as early evening. But this will be a moot point when Nimiq II is up and running. I will also be interested to see if they find room for CITY-DT and the new Craig station in TO which will be full DT from the start.

Hi there, thanks to Kevinw's advice, I just finished install the 8vsb tuner for my Toshiba HDtv, I am in the suburb of Chicago, (about 70 miles west north west) and am now receiving some very good HD signals. I was really surprised that HD signals are already so widespred, where the hell was I?
