Anyone know how to access the Service Mode for an LG RU-52SZ51D? In 4:3, the sides bow in slightly. Will I be able to fix this myself in the service menu? I'm still withing my 30-day return period. Should I exchange if I can't get this fixed? I'm not sure if the problem is really going to bother me, but it might if it gets worse.

This is a common problem called 'pincusioning'. It can easily (normally) be corrected with a service menu adjustment or (on some sets) internal adjustments. Not usually a big problem.
Since it's new and under warranty, I'd suggest to try calling for service. In the meantime, we'll try to find the service code sequence.

Thanks!!!
That's worrisome since that is an LCD set it shouldn't have the pincushion effect nor do I think there is a service menu adjustment for pincushion.
This service menu tweaking might work for that set:

You're probably correct. (I didn't look to see the 'type' of TV he had/has)
OTOH... he either got it fixed or exchanged it since August 9th.

It's DLP. I'm not familiar enough with the technology to know if DLP or LCD are susceptable to pincushioning or not. Call me an idiot, but I kept the set. It looked so good in HD, and the SD either OTA or DirecTv is so crappy that the pincushioning doesn't bother me; in fact, I don't hardly notice it.
Thanks, Neil, for the link. I'll try it out.

Neil, Ratman, thanks guys. Hey, the service menu access is as stated in Neil's reference: press Menu on TV and remote simultaneously for 5 seconds. The service menu for the LG RU-52SZ51D is fairly different from the SZ model. As Neil states, there doesn't seem to be any pincushion/barrel correction, or any other geometric correction except vertical and horizontal placement.
Nonetheless, Neil, you mention that with a 'programmable remote' there are other options that are accessible. Can you shed a little light on that technique? Thanks billions for at last getting the code!
Cheers,
Jeff
The advanced codes I'm talking about can be accessed with one of the many types of "One For All" universal remotes, also refered to by people as "OFA" remotes and other names.
You must tell the remote your model of TV (LG is 0056 I think)
Once you have the universal remote set up to LG, then you can access up to 255 advanced codes. You press the star key, then the advanced code number.
So to enter the service menu without doing the 5 second menu button/menu remote trick, you just use advanced code 019.
There is another service menu on advanced code 018 with different options.
Model RU-52SZ51D <--- D series
Your set is a "D" series model which isn't the latest but close. This summer and fall "E" series sets started appearing. But I thought the menus for the D & E series were supposed to be pretty similar.

On digital displays like DLPs, LCDs (and their variants), pincushioning can be caused only by the lens and/or the screen.
These are digital devices, therefore they are perfect. ;)
Any "analog" issue like pincushioning, focus, internal reflections, etc., will be a mechanical problem. In most digital-based rear projection sets, distortion is a lens issue. There's just no way to have the best optics at certain price points!
