Hello, I enjoy my Toshiba 50h81 but I have a huge blur problem on my toshiba when I place my DVD player in progressive scan mode.....WHY?

I do see the beatiful effect of HD when watching HDTV OTA with my samsung, but with my JVC XV-S65 DVD player (which is a progressive scan player and Im using nice component video cables) it sucks.

Can some one tell me what Im doing wrong with my DVD player and my Toshiba.

Thanks,

I have heard of this problem before with Toshiba RPTVs... the TV is actually displaying 540p (with an input signal of 480p from your PS DVD). With some DVD players, this "upconversion" doesn't go well and you get a poor picture even with a PS DVD. This maybe the case for you. I bought a Toshiba PS DVD for just this reason...

However, it could also just be your contrast/color settings for the DVD input. Is your contrast around 40-50, and brightness the same?

I too have heard of occasional incompatibility issues between DVD Players and HDTVs. If the player is new, take it back and try a different, slightly better brand. If it's not new, you may have to "settle" for the non-progressive mode.

This isn't such a bad compromise because most people see no difference between their DVD player in 480P vs 480i. You may also wish to check if the image is better using the S-video cable than the component cable. Sometimes the upconversion is better this way.

Unfortunately that's the way life is in this world of HDTV with a myriad of problems that you don't find out about until you try.

This is not a "cheapo" DVD player, but it is one of the less expensive PS DVD players and that can sometimes be the cause of the problem.

I have a similiar problem. I bought a Samsung TSL3293HF a few months ago. I'm extremly happy with it -- the picture is great (although the built in sound sucks but who cares).

I just purchased a Philips DVD793C progressive scan dvd player. I hoooked it up (via component video) and put in Lord of the Rings. The 480i mode looks fine but the 480p is out of sync -- like two different images that don't converge correctly.

The Philps docs state "Make sure the TV's Sync Mode setting is correct. For example, on some Philips TVs, set 'SYNC MODE' to 'SYNC MODE 2'. An incorrect Sync Mode setting will cause the picture to shift off-center on the TV screen while using Progressive Scan. Check your TV owner's manual for detials on correct Sync Mode settings."

I can't find anything about sync mode in the Samsung docs or on the TVs menu or even searching the net. Does anyone know anything about this? Can I return my DVD player and get one that outputs the correct sync mode for my TV?
